i have a 1991 LS400 and i'm considering getting new brake pads soon and was wondering what you guys reccomend. i've been looking at these EBC green stuff brake pads from tirerack.

has anyone ever purchased these? is $90 a decent price for brake pads in general? is it a whole set of 4 pads or just 2 front pads???

Mastermind--Brake pads are typically sold as axle sets, either front or rear. One axle set would include 4 pads-->2 for each corner. I've never purchased performance aftermarket pads (such as the greenstuff) so I can't really say what a fair price is. I would guess though that being such a huge and well-known retailer, Tirerack probably has a bit more markup. See what everyone else has to say, and I highly recommend you run a search in the forums. My understanding is that performance pads can be rather hard on stock rotors, but are more resistant to brake fade than genuine Toyota. Also, for your reference, stock Toyota pads are about $50 per axle set online (http://www.irontoad.com) and about $80 in person at my local Lexus dealership.

thanks alot for the info mtsao, i'm kinda considering just using the orginal oem pads they have at iron toad. but then again i would like more stopping power and less dust. the

all i can tell you is that when i went with aftermarket brakepads i had a horrible squeak so i reverted back to toyota OEM pads. I can't remember the aftermarket brand. sorry.

I bought the SATISFIED CERAMIC brand from TireRAck for the fronts and
reg semi-metallic for the back. The braking is very good but not great, however
I have less brake fade than the old pads I had , but they were Raybestos reg.
However , I do get a minor squeak every now and then and it is NOT loud or
anyoning enough , I think it may be because I used my old Lexus Shims
instead of the ones that were on the pads , I removed them.

Mastermind, (and anyone else who is reading )if you have a problem with brake noise, I highly recommend that you purchase a brake anti-squeal spray. This sprays onto the back of the pads between the pad and shims and/or piston. This substance absorbs the vibrations that cause brake noise. Toyota pads should come with an anti-squeal paste packet for you to apply, and I think some aftermarket pads provide them as well. Also, when changing the brake pads it's a good idea to clean all the caliper slides and clips and various contact points on the pad and then lubricate with brake lube (silicon-based).

My advice is to stick with the Toyota/Lexus brake pad. They don't need anything to operate perfectly quietly. The pedal effort is correct, wear is great, dust is not too bad. Some cars don't like aftermarket pads, and the Lexus is one of them. The Raybestos red pads, the cheap ones, are among the worst on the market. Raybestos Brute-Stop Gold carbon metallic are quite good, but expensive. PBR pads work well in many cars, but not this one.
