I don't know if the 2nd gen is similar at all to the first gen, but I would assume that it is, and if so, this link will help greatly:

Also, with my first gen.. when you pop the strut out.. the spring does not uncompress.. The strut mount plate sits on top of the spring and is secured tightly to the strut, so you should have no problems taking the strut out and putting it back in. This same basic design is used in the 2nd gen as well.

Default Replace Strut Rod Bushing on 1st gen LS?

I have a 1991 LS400 w/ 105k miles. I've been hearing a subtle thump from the front left side of the vehicle - it sort of sounds like 2 things are rubbing together. I mostly hear it when I drive over a speed bump, but I occasionally hear it over certain other bumps in the road. I checked the suspension, and everything feels tight. The Upper Arm assemblies were replace in 1994 at 43k. I've been reading through a lot of threads about strut rod bushing replacement, but most of them are from people owning a 95 or later model (which uses a different design). I did notice some minor cracks on what I can see of the bushing. A new bushing is going to cost me about $115. I'm interested in hearing other 1st generation owners experiences. Thanks for any advice.

Hmm... the sound of 2 things rubbing doesn't sound quite right.
Usually the clunks are diagnosed with the following characteristics:
"clunking" or muted "thud" over bumps = tie rods or UCA bushings
clunking when braking = strut rod bushing

However, because it all has to work together as 1 system there could be multiple things at fault.

If your lower ball joint has not been replaced, that is usually the first thing to go. If you can visibly see cracks in any of the bushings, then replace those.

Default Strut rod torque specs request

I am going to replace the front strut rod tomorrow. I need to torque the nuts to a certain specs (lb.ft). I do have this information in my school computer downloaded from the toyota techinfor but don't have it at home.

I would appreciate it a lot if someone can post the the torque specs of the front suspension of a 2 LS400 (96 LS). I remember there is a exploded diagram of it.

I'm actually getting both of these clunks. I'm getting a clunk going over bumps, and clunks during braking but ofcourse I can only hear that if its at low speeds and indoors.

Looks like its time to relace both tie rods and strut bar bushings? How much should a shop charge for this? I'd do it myself but I don't have the space and tools anymore..

I should add that I have the Daizen CA bushings, as well as new lower ball joints, and relatively new struts (30K)..

Suneet--labor should be low from an independent wrench, since these components are fairly quick to do.

Lower tie rod should only take a mechanic about 30 mins, and strut bar cushion about 10-20 mins. UCA perhaps an hour (2 tops) by a competent mechanic.

Just take it to any tire place, they will tell you exactly whats wrong with it. Usually you can just fix it yourself. Sounds like uca.
