The right cam seems to be lined up correctly to my eyes.

Yeah it's that RH Cam that concerns me, it seem like its one notch off, here's were I wish I had a Mitsuboshi belt . I will install the tensioner and turn the engine 2 full revolutions and check the markings.

Here's a better angle

Yes just see if they line up after 2 to 4 revolutions.

Thumbs down

After turning engine two full revolutions to TDC I am convinced that everything is aligned correctly. I did buy and install a Gates belt to compare it to the NAPA brand belt and the Gates belt fits exactly like the NAPA belt so I went the NAPA belt. I might return the Gates belt or keep it and put it on my 97Ls when its do for a TB change.

After two full revolutions LH cam marks aligns with the back plate mark. The yellow mark, ignore the white mark on the cam.

After two full revolutions, RH cam marks seem to line up with back plate mark. Cant wait to crank it up.

Good work there! When I did my 90 LS, I had similar concerns. I rethreaded the belt a dozen times before trusting that it was the closest it was going to get and release the tension and rotate the engine.

After the two revolutions it was very close to perfect and after four it was dead on. I believe the belt had to stretch from new to make the marks line up on both cams and crank pulley.

Now when I do timing belt service I figure the belt stretch in my head and don't doubt myself anymore.

I don't think I was ever more nervous in a drivers seat, than that first turn of the key!

Doing it by yourself is intimidating, but oh so satisfying when done.

"So Debbie, you work on your own cars, like bolt on accessories and maybe brake pads, right?"

Did the timing belt on my non-interference 4 cam 32 valve V8 along with the crank seal after I fabricated a harmonic balancer puller and another to lock out the flywheel, but next I've got to get ready to work on my newer version with interference variable cams.

"Oh. So do you know anything about car stereos, I think the installer screwed up my head unit... ...could you take a look at it real fast?"

Lol!

Good luck and it's cool you are giving another 1st Gen a new lease on life!

Debbie

Thanks! It was the markings on the belt I was questioning. I will rotate the engine two more times to see if the Cams will align perfectly as they did for you, sha4000 did tell me to rotate the engine 4 revolutions.

I wasn't intimidated by this task at alI, felt confident all the way thru do to this being a NON nointerference motor. Now I felt very intimidated when I changed the motor mounts on my 97. Also this was good practice for when I do TB, and cam/crank seals on my 97.

I admire individuals who fabricate their own tools to use on these pulleys.

Good job and everything looks good. Like you said, you have the added security of it being a non interference motor.

Thanks LSG86! I appreciate it, truly. That reminds me to put motor mounts on the list for my 90, doing a R&R on it right now for the power steering pump and rack bushings. So many rubber parts to replace with these cars!
