Default Clear indication your 'new to you Lexus' has not been cared for properly

Working on getting my recently purchased 98 back up to standards and pull this out from behind the glove compartment. Clear sign that the previous owner, who bought the car from Sewell, did not really have a clue on what should have been done with this car.

I don't know... maybe it had a couple more months on it... and I'm sure many of you have found worse, but I certanly hope not. No cleaning this puppy, already in the trash.
OK... on to other parts of the car.

looks gross but the factory cabin air filter is black to being with. it's carbon after all! the aftermarket ones are white.

this is a commonly overlooked item. only the likes of us know what maintenance is necessary, even the smallest of details like the cabin filter.

Many don't realize there is a cabin air filter.

When I was at Toyota getting an oil filter for Dad's Corolla, I asked the parts guy what else can I get to take advantage of the 25% coupon. He rambled off a bunch of typical parts and the cabin air filter was one of them. "That car has a cabin air filter?" He nodded. I'd not seen this on dad's maintenance receipts so I told him to put it in the basket. When I got home and pulled it from the Corolla, it was super nasty. Bird feathers, leaves...about 1/3" of dirt and road grime. After changing that, the Mrs. didn't have sneeze fest the moment the air was blowing.

And how easy or not is that on the Gen 1's?

What year is your LS Dicer?
They did not start adding the cabin air filter until 1993 I believe...
And shoud be in the same place... behind the glove box.
On the 98 you remove the panel at the back of the glove box and then you can access the door over the slot for the filter. Pretty easy task.

Hehe...looks like another fully oiled K&N filter. It will probably screw up another MAF sensor.

this is the cabin air filter, not the engine air filter. but i never knew oil from a K&N could ruin a MAF! i usually oil from the outside in but there is a chance the oil can get through. sorry for the off topic, you started it !

Sorry... no cabin air filter for those years.
On the plus side.. reduces the maintenance cost.

And "technically" (hate that word) it's not a MAF sensor on the second gen...it's an "intake airflow meter", (part #22204). Only know this cause I recently did the maintenance on mine. Oh, and I have a K&N with airbox delete and no codes or problems to speak of. Cheers.

i used to run the K&N but it's just a much bigger hassle in every way than the stock filter... if you hold the K&N filter up to sunlight you can see that there's some decent sized holes in it that surely let more dirt through, and after taking it out i found oil heading up my intake path but the "MAF" is ok. JBrady himself has strongly advised against the K&N so imma listen to him. unless you're gonna tune the engine, why would it benefit from increased airflow? not to mention you basically can't drive the car for many many hours while the filter dries

On the 93-93 models the filter is located below the glovebox, to access remove the passenger side kick panel (just unclips) and then look up, you will see a white plastic box with 2 wing nuts at the bottom remove the nuts and the cover.
Mine has 2 filter panels which sit side by side.

DING DING DING. The 1989-1994 have a KVF Air Flow Meter - NOT a MAF. Which if you look up how a KVF works, the K&N oil comes in and trashes the AFM.

Now the question is. the cabin air filter on the 93-94 - where to buy? Autozone says I dont have one.

Found the charcoal one from Rockauto for $40 - OEM Denso one.
