First and foremost I am not trying to open a can of worms or start an oil debate. I have search this site over and over and have read the whole 22 page mother thread about oil in the FAQ section and have not found a definitive answer.
My question is can I safely go 10k miles on fully synthetic oil like Mobile 1 extended performance and the matching mobil1 ep oil filter? It guarantees engine protection up to 15k miles. Ever since I owned my car at 90k (now at 179k) I changed the oil every 5 to 6k miles using only synthetic oil, but now I cant help but wonder am I waisting money by changing the oil too soon? I once used mobil1 ep and went 9k on it. Owners manual says 3750 or 7500 but thats using regular dino oil I believe. I just like the convenience of longer oil change intervals.

Also I know its a different engine but in the ls430 forums this member did an oil test. The oil and filter was Mobil1 and a Wix filter, the oil had 7500 miles on it. Blackstone said the oil was good with NO contamination and showed a TBN of 4.6 plenty of additives left and suggested going 9000 miles!! www.clublexus.com/forums/ls430/743376-synthetic-oil-change-intervals-3.html

Your likely to get lots of differing opinions for and against so why not just try it and let us know the results. One engine is totally different from the next.

Do the analysis for your car and you'll find what intervals you can run. Each of us have varying driving characteristics and engine wear all play a part in these intervals. No set answer to really give. Keep us posted.

hmm what to say that hasn't been said in the oil threads...i stay away from the extended stuff bc they are not labelled "energy conserving" which our engine needs. i've had oil analysis done to regular mobil 1 after 6k and showed roughly 90% oil life left! that was with another car though, but shows how much better synthetic oils are, and not needing the extended.

the new lexus cars run even more efficient requiring oil changes every 10k already, using thinner oils! as RA40 said, it all depends on driving habit, and also ambient temp. it gets hot in texas so more frequent oil changes are a must.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. RA40 is right, the only way to tell is to get some uoa's done. To play it safe for now I will stick with 7.5-8k oci's regardless of oil I use. I really like how my engine feels with Pennzoil Platinum and I get good gas mileage with it. I also want to try Castrol Edge, I never tried any castrol oil products.
Hey Timmy you bring up a good point about that "Energy Conserving" label, thats why I stopped using Mobil1 full synthetic for high mileage cars, it doesn't have energy conserving on it. I do think its a good oil tho. Not sure what it means anyway.

One last question, Texas heat is Brutal in the summer should I use 10w-30?

I always change mine every 3500-4500. Could probably go a little further on it but i just keep it safe. But hey, if you're feeling adventurous, why not take it up to 10K

I would change my oil every 3500-4500 too if I was using regular conventional oil. For surly u can go at least 6000-6500 miles on full synthetic oil.

Okay here's some proof you can go longer then u think on oils. This guy have a 91 Ls400 with 212k miles and is using REGULAR conventional Pennzoil oil. Here's his Blackstone lab results. The oil is regular Pennzoil with 5100 miles on it, the oil had 2.6 TBN left but here's the shocker, Blackstone recommended going to 7000 miles on his next oil change. I have a 91LS 400 with 322,000 miles change my Mobil one at 15,000 miles and no problems I also use M1 synthetic tranny fluid in the trans change it every 30,000 along with the power steering. I use the mobile one 75-90 in the rear end change it 50,000. My old 1991 Toyota Cressida went 529,000 miles using everything Mobil one and nothing wore out. I have gone 20,000 miles on engine oil changes a few time no problems I do use a extra long AMS oil filter.

Doesn't Amsoil have some 25K mile oil? If its long distance driving and the engine is at operating temp for hours then the oil should last easily to 10k miles. Its the short start and stop that will do it no good.

Bill Dowd every time I see your posts makes me want to buy mobil1, very impressive to get that many miles out your cars. Lol If I had a Ls460 as my primary vehicle like you mabey I might 15k oci on my 97 and 91, but I imagine having many restless nights trying 15k oci's.

Dicer I do about 50/50 city and hwy driving.
Until I get an uoa, I will stick with 7.5-8k oci, using mobil1, Pennzoil, or castrol full synthetic. Mabey 9k with castrol edge
