Default New Lexus Owner

Well I purchased my first lexus a couple of days ago, still getting used to everything, hope i have posted this is the right place, but wasn't sure what to search for ..... A quick question that may seem obvious to you, but just wonder what people make of the picture i have enclosed, should I leave it blanked off? Or connect it? It is to the right of the engine bay, seems like a breather of some sort? What is it? 1998 LS400 by the way. Thanks.

It's a PCV line. Your engine is absorbing unfiltered air and exhausting blow-by gas depending on the engine phase and polluting both your engine and the air. Should be connected like this below.

And it is not venting out the bad gases and moisture in the crank case.

Default Thanks

thanks for the replies! Why would this have been done? Any benefits?
Ive reinstalled it now. Looks like it was done recently, so no damage would have been caused i'm guessing? Cheers. James

You'd better ask it to the one who did it. I don't think it benefits you any. This is just my guess without checking the hose and the PCV valve but the line was not in a good condition or something like that. I once had a cracked hose and it caused intermittent strange sounds + high idle.

Default strange

just a quick question, but ever since I reconnected that hose to the PCV, I've noticed it smokes heavily on start, both cold and when hot, and under acceleration. Strange how this has happened since reconnecting but was fine before? The smoke is blue and i think it is oil. Checked coolant, oil etc and it is fine. Perhaps a bad PCV valve? Thanks.
