Sounds like the gear selector position sensor may be out... Car thinks it's in gear so it does not engage the starter. Did you try to start the car with the shifter in neutral?
other ideas?

yeah there is a neutral safety switch on the gear selector that is probably sticking or bad. just jiggle the level while in 'park' and see if the starter engages. also as legender said, try starting the car in 'neutral' as well.

What was meant is to grab the shift lever and move it back and forth and try to start it. It looks like the neutral safety switch is behind the lever on the transmission that goes to the shifter.

It is attached to the side of the AT near the ATF cooling line.
It has the special electric grease inside to protect electrical contacts from the corrosion and keep the contact resistance low enough. Problem is the grease does not last forever. When it is aged, it begins to loose the capability to keep the low resistance of contacts. Yours must be in this situation.

Dealers just replace the switch unit and charge you more than $300 since the switch unit alone costs nearly $300.

I usually don't replace the switch as dealers do. I only clean contacts electrically using a battery and a bulb. I even don't remove the switch. I have posted the way how to do it a few years ago and I'm sure you can find it searching the forum. A search is always a good friend.

So you turn the key and nothing? You turn the key and the engine turns yet won't start? Showing the wrong shifter position could be the shift selector switch also called neutral safety switch. Its on the transmission case where the shift linkage goes from the shifter.

Sounds like a problem of the neutral safety switch. Check it. The methods are somewhere in the forum. A search is always your good friend.

There is also an infamous issue with the trunk wiring on early models that results in mysterious electrical issues. You might keep it in mind -> http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/lighting/bulbout.html
