Default ECU Question

Just changed plugs, wires, rotors and caps. Now I have a ticking noise behind the front cam cover. The timing belt was changed last week. Should I disconnect the battery to let the ECU reset the timing with the new plugs, rotors, caps ect...? That why it is ticking? Someone said to have the timing checked but I thought the 93 LS had a computer that does that?? If I do need to disconnect the battery how long does it take to reset?

thanks

you can try to disconnect the battery it wont hurt. i am not sure if you have the factory radio deck. just make sure it doesn't have a code, which i doubt. but it only takes like a minute for the ecu to reset. everything resets, but i dont know if it will have any effect on the engine. disconnecting the battery wont hurt to try like i said earlier. good luck

I do have the factory radio but have no code. Anybody know if the Engine ECU keeps the Plugs, Rotors, Caps in sync with the timing?

Also can somebody settle the argument that this 93 LS does NOT need the timing adjusted because it is controled by the computer?

Any help would be great since I am having to take it to the dealership in the morning and I don't want to pay for trail and error if I can point them in the right direction.

thanks!

spxChrome,

Yes, the timing on your 93 LS is controlled by the ECU. Resetting the ECU only helps if your car was very sluggish because of old plugs, wires, rotors and caps. Plus, it will give you the opportunity to let the ECU re-learn, could mean the stronger car.

The ticking noise is because of the sticky injector or valve. I believe it has nothing to do with the timing.

But the ticking noise didn't start until I changed the plugs, wires, caps and rotors. At least now I will know not to have them check the timing. Is the timing belt the same as the ingnition timing? Maybe that is ticking now because of the new parts?

I think part of the cam gear is hitting the timing cover. Since all of the noise happened after you change the caps, rotors and wires. Just figure it out which side the noise is coming from and remove the timing cover. Behind the timing gear you will see the metal plate and a small tap. Make sure the timing cover go behind the small metal tap. Also, make sure the plastic cover for the spark plug wire not hitting some part of the cam gear.

that is a great idea because that is kind of what is sounds like. it is coming from the drivers side. if i remove that cam cover which is connected to the plugs cover can i run the engine with the cam cover off to see if that removes the noise? or will running the car with the cam cover removed be a no-no? it doesn't appear to be air tight since the the plugs are coming out of the cam cover.

thanks VVT-I!!

FWIW, I was just browsing thru the service manual on my '91 LS and I noticed a line under the ISC section that said it should be making a "ticking" sound if it is functioning properly.

Could this be what you're hearing?

the tick was not apparent until we changed the plugs, wires, rotors and caps.
