I figured for $45, I might as well go ahead and put in a new MAF regardless. That'll be here Saturday.
It's only about 8* outside today, so I only did a couple minutes work. Checked out the air filter, and it was pretty nasty. Will replace that right away. I checked the throttle body, and didn't notice any looseness, but I think perhaps I'll go ahead and clean it tomorrow when the temps go up. I'll also use that time to inspect the hoses and look for vac leaks.

A MAF seldom generates P017X alone. I'd rather check the fuel issues.

I'd check the fuel pressure first since I can do it quickly asking a friend who is a shop owner to let me use the gauge and the adapter. I often help him fixing electronics related problems and he never refuses me to use his mechanical equipments.
But I don't know your situation and you may not do it quickly. Another idea to check is to use the starting fluid. If this makes your car easy to start, it simply means that the fuel is not well supplied.

Narrowing things down a bit.
When I put the key in the ignition and turn it over, I do *not* hear any priming of the fuel pump. I pulled the relay, and will take it to get it checked tomorrow. But as suggested above, I'm leaning toward the fuel system being the culprit and not the MAF (which I replaced with new without any change).
Could not identify any vac leaks. Was going to clean the throttle body, but damn that hard plastic tube is tough to get off of the front!! Loosening the clamps does nothing to loosen the tube-on either side! But I only had limited time and again, it was freezing outside when I checked that out.
I'd be very happy if this was just a relay.......

There are a few more items I may inform you to troubleshoot quicker. But I will not because you are doing in accordance with your own way.

Please don't think I'm ignoring your advice at all! I'm just doing what I think I'm capable of doing as the car sits in the driveway! I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to have it towed to my mechanic shortly, but I guess I just want to cover whatever I'm capable of doing on my own first.
So the current status is this:
Plenty of gas.
Tested the fuel pump relay, and it's OK.
Brand new battery.
New MAF.
Code was P0170, but that immediately went away after cleaning the MAF (just with compressed air) the first time, but now I can't get the car to start, so I don't know if the code has come back, or if the same conditions exist.
When the ignition is switched to "on," I can hear low level buzzing coming from the engine compartment, but NO noise from the fuel pump-not hearing it prime at all.
Trying to start the car, it cranks like crazy, but will not turn over. Shows no signs of turning over at all.
I would very much appreciate any "next steps" that I can take with the car in my driveway! Thanks!

Had it towed to my mechanic, and I have an answer: the fuel pump is dead, which is sort of what I figured. Ah well.....
They're quoting me $800 for parts/labor, over $400 for the part alone. They have no problem with me finding my own parts, which I think I'll do. Any thoughts on that? Where would you order from?
