Not sure if this is the right place or not. I recently had a 1990 Celsior imported into Canada and during the process the keys were lost. The car is currently sitting in a storage unit waiting for the day that it will be legal here. In the mean time I need to figure out how to get a key for it. Would it be easier to go to a local junk yard and pull everything out of an LS400 to rekey it or will I be able to go to a lexus dealer and get a key made for it? Any help is MUCH appreciated.

when you can prove it is yours (title) go to the dealer and they will cut you a key ($$$ but MUCH better than junk yard stuff)

I was under the impression that you must have at least one master key or the little metal number plate to get new keys. Otherwise you must get a new ecu with matching key. They systems have changed over the years but I'm pretty sure that's the case for anything pre-2000. Best thing to do is call your local lexus dealer. They can tell you for sure.

Keep us posted on the process. Not sure how that will work for a JDM UCF-1X. US spec Lexus cars will have the corresponding key codes but for JDM...

No, you don't need to worry about the ECU. It's a 90 JDM which is way too old to worry. There is a key number hidden at inside of the door and ask a Japanese dealer to cut the key showing an owner's evidence. I hope this service is available there too.

Well I got lucky. Went to the local junk yard and they had an LS400 sitting. Started checking it over and there were some keys in the glove box. I pulled the ignition out of it and shipped it it to my importer. He put it all on the car and she fired right up. So now I have to go and pull all the door locks off the scrap car. I can live with only spending $20 so far.

Yep, that's a LOT cheaper than new keys.

I couldn't be happier. Only way I could get happier is if the car was in the states already.

I assume it will be legal next year? Once its 25 years old? I've always wanted a Toyota Century..... once the 97 models with their V12 hit that age..... i dunno... we will see!

Yes YoshiMan. 25 year rule Sucks. At least I don't have to wait 2+ years for it like a few of my buddies are. It's really not all that expensive to ship a car from Japan. I have a friend in Vancouver that has started hitting auctions up and is finding nice cars for 600-1200 and paying roughly 1200 to ship. This car with shipping and all so far is running me roughly 3500. Now once I get it stateside I'll have to pay to register it and all that good stuff. But from what I was told at my local dmv is that I register it as I would any other car. No extra fees or headache from there.
