Default LS400 dont go sometimes.

Hi I am a proud owner of a 1998 LS400 and just recently when I put my car into D (Drive) it just sits there revving, I have to move to another gear 4 and then it will move off and then I put it into drive again and all is fine, this only happens now and again. Does any body know why its doing this. Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like a shift linkage problem, the trans is in neutral, gearshift is in drive..........

yes, it does to me also, worn bushing or slack, having to go past the gear to get into it, AND that would make it dangerous going to park, you might still be in reverse...
dont know where the op is, but he better wake up.

Hi,
the problems is very intermittent, can be ok for a while then it happens, if it happens its mostly on first start up of the day, once it moves off its okay. I will check trans fluid level tomorrow and let you know, not mechanically minded so not done a lot as I don't know what I am doing, its going in the shop next week so will ask mechanic to check the transmission linkage. will let you know how I get on, thanks for the replies. Hope this makes sense?

transmission fluid expands as it heats up, and works better at temperature. so when the car is warm, the trans engages much easier meaning the car may be low on trans fluid. only use OEM toyota type-IV ATF when refilling!

the trans fluid dip stick is located under the master cylinder. make sure you're on a level surface when checking .

As stated ensure that the car is on a level surface when you check the transmission fluid level and use nothing but Toyota type IV fluid if you need to top it up. Don't overfill it. You'll find the dipstick on the passenger side of your car, being a RHD UK vehicle. It's marked and it's just aft of the engine oil dipstick.

oh yes good catch, RHD car means it's on the passenger side! note there is a HOT level and COLD level. i like to measure after driving a few miles then using the HOT level.
