ur mechanic is an idiot and that last statement is a joke..no one here told u it was in fact a bhg..not one person. im telling u right now unless u have coolant loss, or a massive misfire..u don't have a bhg..do a compression check.did ur mechanic do a block check

Well, if you can't do the proper tests, you are just rolling the dice. Maybe you'll get lucky and fix the problem through collateral damage, but none of what you have said so far sounds like a BHG.
In my 15 years as a tech, I have never seen a BHG blow smoke through the vents. A blown heater core or rad, maybe but never a BHG.

That plug is also not a sign of a BHG, it's not even close. It should be virtually clean if it's blowing white from coolant loss. Python is right and if you had BHG, you would have a loss of coolant.
PD is likely right with the PS valve,

Fixing a lot of Nissan Maxima's =\= a mechanic. If he cannot do the basic checks for a BHG, he is an idiot. Either there is coolant loss, coolant&oil mixing or massive oil loss for it to be a BHG. Checking the coolant reservoir for exhaust gas is one way, another is if it is venting out the cap. A compression and leak-down test should also always be done before condemning a HG.

If none of that has been done, welcome to a massive can of works and wasted money!

If you search for anything power steering related you will get an explanation of the problem and how to fix it. There is a "how to" with nice pics if I remember correct. I'd change the "O" ring between the reservoir and pump while I was at it.
