Simple License Plate Screws
I need to put my plates on. I tried 1/4-20 screws and also 6 mm screws. Both don't seem to fit. Does anyone know what the right thread is? Thanks.

TIP
I finally got some M6 bolts with a hex head, that you can drive with a socket. I also tapped the rusted holes, and drove the M6 through, for an easy fit. The tip is, instead of phillips head, get hex-head bolts for easy screw-in.

License Plate Bolt Specs
The correct specs is 6mmx1.0 or at least this is true for my '95. If a 6mm bolt doesn't fit properly, check your tread.
Remember that your Lexus is not an American car, so everything is in metric and 1/4-20 is definitely not metric.

I recently replaced my license plate frame with a Stainless Steel one and i was in the same boat. most screws and bolts look ugly and the choice in metric sucks. so i went and ordered ARP 12 point 1/4 x 20 SS 3/4 in lenght from south coast stainless. let me tell you they are the coolest. i had to run a tap (1/4 x 20) thru the old holes which was a smaller dia. and made new threads. oh i got the polished ones for 1.00 each extra they cost 1.91 each plus the polish job. now it's all stainless steel and no rust.

Mine are actually metric, stainless steel socket cap head (allen head) bolts which I can easily find at a local hardware store.
While stainless steel itself won't rust, the dissimilar metals between the bolts and the trunk lid will cause an electrochemical reaction that cause corrosion. So, make sure you lubricate the bolt treads with something that will stay, grease comes to mind if you can't find anti-seize compound. A very thin coating should be enough.

oops i forgot to mention i did use luberplate on the treads. and if in the future if i have trouble i will insert rivnuts and no more problems. i was going to do this but i wanted to see if there was enough metal to give me enough treads and there was so i went that way.

or you can buy some special made ones like from junction produce. I think I have seen them all but 25 - 30 bucks for them is toooooooooooooooo much. I will just keep the plain stock ones.
My license plate is the kind the numbers light up so that is good for me. The light kit was $200 Sorry only in Japan.
