96 Celsior Oil leak - To change Timing Belt or Not to ?
I have noticed an oil leak over the past month, but no need to fear as I monitor and add engine oil when necessary (which is roughly 1 quart every 2 weeks of daily driving). Yesterday, I finally got time to get it checked out as to where this leak is coming from. After putting my 96 Celsior (UCF21 with stock 1-UZ) on the ramp yesterday, the mechanic and I both noticed the engine oil leak from the front Crank Shaft Pulley Seal.
Option 1>>>Should I proceed to just change this seal alone ?
Option 2>>>or since it would cost around the same labour, should I change the engine timing belt one time ? (since I dont think it has ever been changed on my 160k KM Celsior )
Should you guys recommend Option 2, which timing belt kit is best suggested (best in terms of quality and affordability)

Aisin TKT-030 is the only smart choice in a kit, because it is the only one with the real Toyota parts! and it is also cheap at around $200 - also make sure to only use genuine Toyota cam and crank seals!
I'm in the same bolt and already have my kit, I'm just waiting for the weather to warm up. I'm not loosing as much oil as you are though. I can also see my passenger side valve cover leaking down the manifold so I'm going to do that also. Luck you, I keep reading how the cam seals are a pain to do on the 98-00. I'm considering buying the tool to hold the cams that cowboy has posted several times. I'm trying to find the correct part # for the serp belt.
I have the same problem in my Celsior except I lose 1 quart an hour! haven't been driving it much.
I intend to check the timing belt condition and play in the pullies when I take it apart, if they are still in good shape I'm not replacing it, the parts are expensive and when you get a car from Japan you don't know when the last service was, could have been recent and all new parts. The timing belt however is important on this interference engine (my VVT-i 1UZ is anyways), and since you have to take the timing belt off at the same time as the Front main, thats a good time to do it.
Its a good sized job though, I can see why you'd be putting it off.
I was driving it back from the port in Vancouver to Calgary, about 1000km. We stayed over night about 300km into the trip and it was -20c out, the next day the front main opened up like a tap. I bought 20quarts of oil and stopped every 1.5hrs to fill it back up the whole way home.
Currently replacing all the parts needed to get it legal, including the front main! hoping it doesn't need a timing belt! but if its even worn a bit I'll do it, no blowey uppey is good!
