Thinking about picking this LS up tomorrow but need opinions. He wants 2k for it but before I got his address he told me that the steering fluid leaks and he has to put more every 2 weeks into the resevior. He doesn't know where it's leaking from and it is raining like crazy this week.

I just barely picked up a 90 ls400 but those seats are messed up if he hasn't took care of the issue the cars obviously been neglected. Also the power steering leak as far as I know leads to messing the alternator up. I wouldn't buy it

But couldn't it be a leak somewhere else? I'm not too worried about the seat, can probably find it anywhere and it's tan lol

the leak is definitely in the power steering, it may not be expensive to fix, usually the o-ring or a hose

however if you don't fix this leak immediately, it will quickly kill the alternator

I am not sure this is that great of a deal, for an LS400, the seats are really shot - I would be much more worried about that, and how the car has been taken care of to be this poor on the inside!

I'm really no expert on these cars or any cars for that matter. I'm learning from my dad and all the members quickly about these cars. The leak itself wouldn't worry me. As cowboy said its most likely not expensive. What would worry me is how long this guy has been letting it leak. If he's saying he tops it off every week, the alternator is most likely gonna be done really soon

I think you should be patient and hold out for a better example - new LS400's come on craigslist practically every day! - find one with a beautiful interior, the rest of the car will have been taken care of as well!

I know they are more money, but consider at '98 or newer. You may be money ahead and happier with something like these example below. There was a super nice 2000 yesterday but I see it's gone today.

If:

You need to buy a DD soon
Able to do the repairs yourself
All other systems are in good order.
Trans fluid isn't black
Tires are good

I would be tempted.

as long as you budget money for repairs you'll be fine.
