Anyone done both of these years? Are there any major differences in the two? I've done the 96 but time is coming up to do the 99, probably in the spring. Any surprises?

the differences are so slight they almost aren't even worth mentioning, even an LS430 is virtually identical, as seen here in this video that is very helpful for review!

actually they are notably different, the vvt-i hardware and the way the thing is timed before pulling it all apart makes them somewhat different from pre '98 cars.

VVT-i 1UZ/2UZ/3UZ are all almost identical to do though.

Thanks for that - great video. Looks a bit easier than the 96.

I remember on the 96 you had to tie the cam pulleys in case they rotated, but he's not doing that here - is that right? No tension on them here?

tie the cam pulleys?? - I have done the timing belts on several LS400's and and many other makes, and I have never tied a cam pulley!

A particularly impressive job for a guy doing his very first timing belt - I can really find no fault with the job he does in this video, except for one major flaw, he fails to use a torque wrench on reassembly, which is a pretty sizable screw-up, but still pretty darn brave to film your very first attempt at doing a major repair such as a timing belt on an LS430, and it fires right up on an interference engine, so have to congratulate Nick's job overall.

The 50 degree crank angle technique is not mandatory, it is just good practice - when you rotate the engine an additional 50 degrees, you are in a much safer place as far as valves hitting pistons (sometimes a cam wants to lurch from valve-spring pressure when you remove the old belt, and 50 degrees further rotated after TDC is a place where there is minimal valve spring tension on the cams, and also some distance to the pistons if it were to "lurch")

well me and Jon have done 5 of them so far 96, 97, 99, 2000, & 2003.. the only real difference is the number of teeth on the belt..... work is all the same... and we have never done the 50 degree rotation.... or tied a cam pulley...just not our style.. but we do use a torque wrench.. both of my 99's are about 20k away...
