1996 LS - dash is perfect save for the fact that the previous owner had installed some kind of plastic/acrylic mounting plate presumably for some kind of electronic device.

In any event, I remove the plate and the four screws that were holding it down (it was not even centered well, tripping my car OCD) and low and behold my perfect dash is clearly not perfect any longer.

I really do not want to replace the entire dash and am looking at some vinyl dash repair kits. I know they wont be perfect, but its better than black duck tape

In any event, looking at the pics, can anyone recommend or share some experience with ways to repair or creatively hide this awful looking spot?

No mods other than putting a nice head unit it. Generally want it as stock and original as possible.

In that case I would try this, you could take upholstery paint and some resin/super glue, take a little piece of cardboard and build up your resin and spray you a little bit of paint in it mix it up and swipe it to fill in the holes and crack. It'll see be barely visible untill it dries. Then scrape off the excess around it once it cures and spray over it if need be with the paint. I use resin all the the time at work to repair granite and plastics.

no fixes for that that will make that look anywhere near passable.

either have a dash mat made, or swap the dash.

Never even thought about using a dash pad after I do some amateur repairs. I ordered some crack filler and vinyl dye... will repair as best i can and then just use the area to place an iPhone cradle or something. Thanks for all the feedback.

Not sure of the system they use, but the largest Lexus dealership in the United States, JM Lexus, has an amazing detail shop - I have seen repairs they have done to Lexus dashes that had much more damage than this, and when they were done, I could not even locate where the repair was done!

I am pretty sure part of their system involved a method of matching the factory "grain" (texture) of the original dash material, and of course being the Toyota zone distributor, they have perfect factory paint/dye matching and some type of computerized color matching if there is any fading.
