Usually, I just refer to the model change LS400s as the ".5" versions. For example, my '99 would be a 2.5LS, while someone else's '93 could be a 1.5LS, since that's when there were body refreshes, but not to the extent of creating an entirely new car.

I owned a '90 LS400. It was a great car minus the air suspension problems!

Here is everything you need to know about the Ls400 http://blog.lexus.co.uk/2013/10/innovations-of-the-second-generation-lexus-ls/

If you get a Ls400, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a 95 and up due to the more interior room. Yes the 98-00 model is the grand daddy of them all, but the 95-97 Ls400 aren't too bad either trust me. If you buy a 90-94 model you MIGHT regret not getting the a 95 or newer. I love my 97, but now I want a 98-00 model.
In my humble opinion, the 2nd gen Ls (95-97) is a huge upgrade over the 1st gen(90-94).

I bought a 1990 LS400 two years ago, only because it was in such a great shape that I didn't think I could find any other LS400 like that any time soon: one owner, dealer maintained, older lady driven to church and back, highway miles only, never gone over 65mph, 155k miles, and above all - engine and transmission were like brand new (and still are). Now it has 175k miles, and the engine is the smoothest thing that I ever heard, sounds absolutely brand new. I even get a new car mileage: around 24-25mpg on highway (when I take a trip to LA, from SF, and I usually drive around 75-85mph), and around 20mpg around home (which includes some highway).

The only thing I disliked about my car were the breaks. But after much planning and with a bit of unexpected setbacks (which you can find about on this forum), I finally upgraded all four wheels to 1997 brakes and wheels. The difference is like day and night. A few times I had to brake in panic, true emergency braking and the car just felt like it hit a wall or something. I could not go back to old brakes any more.

I would say that the condition of the car is the single most important thing, more important than the year. My car never left me stranded, and I have taken a few trips with it. Once even my alternator gave up, and yet, after it cooled down, it started working again just enough to get me home. And I didn't even know that it warns about such impending doom with all lights on the dash coming on at once... and I was wondering why my dash was all lit up like a Christmas tree.
.

BTW, I also installed a radio/navigation/bluetooth/dvd player in it, with a back-up camera, so now I have that big screen and navigation in it too. All that for $200 bucks.

I am seeing more and more really cheap 1995-1997 LS400 around , and am almost tempted to get another one - except I don't really need it.
The prices seem to be low because everyone is buying a new car these days.

PeterLS... ramble all you want... we're here to listen. And congrats on your upgrades and still feeling like you got a heck of a deal on a great car. That's all that matters.....original poster probably did not fare as well as you did.
Enjoy!
And if you really want to feel special... find you a used 98-2000 model...those are nice cars.

I concur with Legender. The UCF10's are great, solid cars. There are only two things I dislike about my '90. The headlights are horrible. Also, I have a white, two-tone and I hate how the very bottom trim is black, if you know what I'm referring to. If you ever get a chance to test drive a '98 - '00 you should. It's like a ucf10 on steroids.
