Default LSD for LS400

Does anyone make a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) for the LS400's (any year(s))?

Hey LXTASY, where in Texas are you? I am in Houston and have been pursuing that option as well.

I THINK the RMM carrier will install in the LS diff housing. They sell for $750 and you need to install it with your existing gears or other gears. Honestly, there is no need for LSD on most LS400s except in drag racing. You really have to work at getting wheelspin. I had a 96 before my 99 and have had both to the track. I have the new GTech Pro Competition arriving tomorrow. This is the brand new, 3 accelerometer unit giving MUCH MUCH more data than the standard Pro unit. I will be doing extensive testing on my LS400 with before and after gains for all the mods I do. Next mod is installing a set of 95 LS400 gears which multiply the torque 3.62 times vs. the 3.27 times for my current set. Of course the tranny will shift 10% sooner so there is a slight tradeoff vs the top of each gear vs mph.

Anyway, PM me if you are anywhere close to Houston and we can do full numbers on your car as well as discuss upgrades.

Default Texas

Austin, Texas !!! I do not want the LSD solely for the purpose of racing. I like the benefit of being able to get started from a dead start faster on wet roads. God do I hate spinning a tire around a corner or a slick area on the road. I WANT MAXIMUM TRACTION.

P.S. I'm in the process of dumping the 96 for a 2000LS. Lexus of Austin did an appraisal on my car today and threw me some #'s ($$) on what they would do for trade & sell me a black 2000 w/Nak/heated seats/sunroof, 42K miles, certified.

Exellent choice! You will love the 2000 even MORE than the 96. All the mods I am considering will be of direct application to you. I enjoy Austin and I will PM you next time I drive up and we can exhange car stories, ditto if you drive to Houston.

Have you ever driven a powerful car with LSD before? In the rain/slick it can actually be HARDER to control as the back end gets completely loose as opposed to the single tire thing. Yes, you have more traction but when its slick it is not much more. Also, the 98-00 cars have 3.27 gears vs. the 3.62s in the 90-97 cars. This makes the off the line torque VERY similar between these years. It is tough to spin the tire on clean dry pavement without brake torquing. Anyway, I want LSD also and am debating the full housing at around $1500 with 3.76s or just the carrier at around $750.

jbrady,

The $1500 RMM upgrade is a Torsen diff with shorter (numerically higher) ratio which not only yield "two-wheel" traction but also more available torque at the wheels. The problem is your speedometer will be off. This I have found the answer to, a speedometer adjuster called yellowbox made by an Australian company.

The $750 LSD you were talking about is TRD unit I take it ? If so, I believe it's the clutch type. This is probably the most economical option, granted that you know what you are doing when setting up the ring and pinion gears meshing pattern. You can always pay someone to do it correctly though. This way there is no extra available torque and no need for speedometer adjustment.

I was going to use a/t Supra TT rear end, but I don't think that will fit although the R&P ratio is also 3.76. Do you know if the one that RMM has is a bolt-on to LS400s or is it just for GS400 ?
