Questions, just changed air filter
I just changed the air filter, but I have no idea how long the old one was in. I used a Pronto pa4646. Denso was triple the price of the Pronto. I just bought the car and was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to get this dirty? How often do they need to be changed? Did the old one still have some life in it by looking at the pics? The Pronto is a good fit. I didn't see a brand name on the old filter, so I have no idea what brand it was?

that filter was way overdue to be changed, looks like it has been in there for years.
it is hard to give you a specific change interval, in damp humid climates like Seattle they can last 30,000 - 40,000 miles, but in a dusty place like Arizona or West Texas, or if you travel on a lot of dirt roads, you would be lucky to get 8,000

it's not only the oil but i believe the the k&n does not have the same surface area to filter the air with compared to OEM filters. since the k&n is like a cone shape, there is a huge chunk of rubber that acts like a plug rather than be efficient. now if k&n made it similar to the factory design i would bite.

K&N is a dumb way to go on most cars newer than the 1970's
just remember, on Lexus/Toyota, when you deviate from OEM parts on anything besides oil, oil filter, pan gaskets, and battery, you are probably screwing up the car unnecessarily!

K&N filters work fine when used properly. Don't expect a huge performance gain but the filter does work relatively well and saves you money pretty quickly compared to new filter costs.
I've never seen a properly oiled (ie-not overoiled) K&N filter break a lextoy MAF (not AFM, AFMs like in the 1LS are far more sensitive to contaminants).

i just put one in a few months ago
i just put in a kn filter a few months ago. nothing to report. may have helped with gas mileage.
i have gotten better gas mileage but its probably due to several reasons. i switched to shell gas. i really didn't think that would help but it did, then i put the kn filter and then i switched tires from 205/65/15s to 225/60/15s, weirdly enough, the 225s were a little taller. so with those 3 things my mileage per tank has improved. now i'm gonna change the plugs. ...see what that does.
