Default 1992 LS400 - Strangely good gas mileage for the state of the vehicle.

Before I start, just a little updated pic since I haven't posted in a while.

My car has 282,000kms (176,250 miles) and the motor has seen better days. It ticks (valve buckets need reshimming) albeit not too badly and has a pretty serious exhaust leak at the downpipes (flanges were repaired super-ghetto and all the "welds" cracked) yet I'm still able to constantly attain 10L/100km (24-26mpg) or LESS on the regular! I don't drive it gently and grandpa it, I drive it hard and drift it from time to time. It sees limiter action rather regularly. It consumes little to no oil at every oil change (less than a quarter pint) and runs strong despite its flaws. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the plug electrodes are worn and the plugs are due because of my faulted thermostat that I changed about 2 months ago (car was overfueling and was running super rich). My cats are also blocked and need to be changed (bypassed most probably). The car needs love on the engine side, I know, but it's my daily and can't really afford downtime until I pick up another car for daily use/winter. I'm just stumped at the gas mileage despite its faults and its ability to still haul serious *** for what it is haha. Any comments, inputs, feedback are welcome homies!

Renato.

10L/100km is 23.5 mpg which is very close to what the 1990 LS400 that I drove from new to 183,500 miles averaged at highway speeds. Fuel economy did not decline as my 90 aged. Fuel usage in mostly low speed driving, however, was much worse. The valves in my 90 were ticking a bit for the few years before I sold it in 2003 but it wasn't bothersome and wasn't worth fixing. It's a great engine and better yet it is non-interference so there is no damage if the timing belt (water pump, idlers, tensioner) fails. I know that the second owner of my 90 drove it to nearly 300K miles before he sold it.
