The attached 32 pages of a PDF file shows how Denso has struggled to cope with Toyota's requirement and filters have been changed the design and the manufacturing method. It is all written in Japanese but photos and drawings may help you to know the contents some.

It explains why and how Denso needed to make current type of filters. It is the result of the cost reduction keeping performances good.

Another interesting point is that Toyota once had used Purolator oil filters in North American factories because of the cost and the quality. Later on Denso and Purolator made a company named PURODENSO in 1989 and it had been supplying oil filters to those factories. Initially the investment ratio was 50%-50% each but in 2001, Denso took over it and it's a 100% Denso company after that.

wow...get a wix/napa gold and be done with it, u guys are putting way too much effort into this thread. the only time a better filter comes into play is if u run EOC intervals of 5000+ miles..then a platinum filter should be used.
u change ur oil at 3000 miles? any filter will work for u..even a low grade fram with their cheaply made by pass and drain back valves

the filter comparison at Olathe Toyota (they paid Jason at TacomaHQ.com to do it, actually) is not a bad little filter comparison, but it is by no means scientific, but more observational, which can be helpful in its own right, to spot major sloppiness, but nothing that some of us haven't done at home with our filter cutters.

PS - one of the brands here, the Chinese Microgard, I would NOT use in an LS400, nor would I use an A/C Delco as I have caught manufacturing issues of great concern inside these two brands in the past.

Curious to why when someone tests a FRAM against something expensive like a K&N, they use one of FRAM'S cheapest designs, rather than their premium FRAM Ultra filter, that is still lower cost than a Bosch or K&N

The WIX, Bosch, and K&N are the best filters in this comparison, versus the lower end filters they tested against.

Well I thought that Denso on rockauto sounded too good to be true. Thanks for the explanation!

Right now I am using Motorcraft FL400S, costs only $3.69 on Amazon + free shipping if you are a Prime member. It seems to work just fine, and I change my oil every 5k miles, so I hope I am OK there.

bypass valve setting on our filters is 8-11...napa's 1348 is what is supposed to go on the car. if u want or absolutely feel the need for a larger filter a napa 1516 is the one that will work

I have been using the Amsoil EAO34 type for 15 years on my 1991 LS 400 with 313,000 miles and changing the engine oil at 15,000 to 20,000 miles and no problems using mobile one extended I use Mobile one in everything so far so good I also use the Mobile one trans fluid in PS trans and change it every 30,000 use 75-90 in rear end change it 50,000 I also put on a motor home trans cooler and small power steering cooler seems to help here hot So Cal.

I changed the oil this weekend on my 02 LS430. I went with the oversize Fram Ultra (XG3600). It is about an inch longer than the stock Toyota 90915-YZZD3 that it replaced, same diameter. Cost was $8.50 from Amazon. It's an extended change filter (15k), but I'll probably change the oil and filter again at 7500-8500 mi.

u should do ok with the extended guard..the extra guard filters are cheaply made

I prefer the Purolator PureOne 20195. I stocked up a few years ago, and soon will need to restock. Not sure where to get them at the right price nowadays.

I just bought a box of Toyota filters for $40. With such low prices, it is hard to justify using anything else, unless there are better filters our there...
