Default LS400 Headroom for taller people?

Hello all,

I am considering an LS400 with a sunroof for my next car purchase. I haven't gone yet to test drive one but before I did, I wanted to see what taller people (I'm 6'4") thought about the headroom in the LS400. I have driven a 2004 LS430, if that matters, and had plenty of room.

I currently drive a 2003 BMW 330Ci with sport seats and moonroof and my headroom is terrible. Constantly hitting my head.

Thanks all!

I'm 5'10 and I drive a 325ci and a 1995 LS. The Lexus does not have all the adjustments like a BMW. I think at 6'2 you are gonna be coming pretty close to the head liner. Unless you always have the sunroof shade open.

I'm 6'4 as well, and my 95 LS400 feels very roomy. I have plenty of room between me and the headliner. I even went on a road trip with my dad last month (who is also 6'4) and he was able to sit in the backseat comfortably, even when I-70 westbound was shut down and we were stuck for traffic for 4 hours.

I have had the headroom issue on certain cars as well, but not even close on this one. I actually had a 1992 Toyota Paseo once, which was an awesome car, but i hit a dip really hard once, bashed my head on the ceiling and was so dazed that i almost wrecked the car... It was time to hang it up on that one.

your overall height isn't 't really a large factor in this case. it's your torso length that needs to be considered for headliner clearance. regardless i believe the LS is pretty roomy with plenty of seat adjustment to play with, but i'm skinny and a hair under 6ft.

I'm 6-4 with a long torso. I have to lean the front seats back gangsta style to fit in an LS with out hitting the ceiling. Same problem in a 96 and 99. Even with the seat all the way back and all the way down.
I love the big Lexus, but the lack of headroom keeps me from buying one.
Back seat is worse.
My 90 Civic wagon has more headroom. No style, but lots of headroom.

You'll have to drive an LS and figure it out for yourself.

really the primary vehicles with more headroom than an LS400 are full size pickups and the SUV's based off of them (i.e. GMC Yukon)

I agree with timmyOtool - torso length is the issue. I'm 6' but have the legs of a 5'6" person and the torso of a 6'6" person; I sit taller than my 6'4" mate. I only just have enough headroom in my '98 LS400, with the seat down as far as possible and reclined slightly more than I'd ideally prefer.

Thanks for the great responses guys! That's definitely a concern that some of you have to kick back your seat quite a bit. That's what I have to do in my current car and it definitely is not ideal. I have back problems and it's a pain to have to do it.

I will definitely go out and test drive one later. What's weird is that the LS430 with a sunroof had more than enough headroom for me. I was hoping that it would be the same for the LS400. I guess I'll just have to go see.

The LS430 has only slightly more headroom in front than the 95-00 LS400 but much more in the rear. You may have had the seat reclined more when you drove the LS430.

I'm exactly 6 feet tall and my hair barely brushes the headliner of my 2000 LS400 even when the seat cushion is in its lowest position. Due to back pain, I prefer to keep the seat back more upright than many people. I noticed than a friend about your height who used to have a 99 LS400 seemed to severely recline the seat back to keep his head away from the headliner.

You will just have to drive a few cars to see if they fit you.

If you are considering a 2004-up LS430, you should know that 2004 was the first year that radar cruise control and Pre-collision System (PCS) were available but they were only available as options on cars with the Custom Luxury or Ultra Luxury packages. These are incredible features and I won't be buying another car with out them - expensive and rare options way back then but our new Prius has them.

the first wasn't available in US model LS400s and the latter was never offered on an LS400.
