Which one to choose?
This is for a 1999 LS400.
So, I got a quote on a timing belt/water pump job (TB/WP) from a shop for $1050 plus labor (rough estimate). The mechanic asked, if I wanted to get the distributors replaced but it'll cost a couple hundreds more so probably around $1300 or so. He also stated, the Valve Cover Gasket (VCG) doesn't need to come off while changing the TB/WP. This shop quoted 6.8hrs listed or around there.
Another shop I was quoted $1,585 for the same thing but no distributors replaced. This shop included a replacement of VCG. This shop quoted 10.8hrs listed.
Both shops charge $85 an hr for labor and will replace cam seals.
Money wise, I have enough for either one but I'm not sure which to go for.

you need to find a new mech...
the '98+ xUZ engines don't have distributors.....
On top of that the prices you've listed are sky-high, approaching and surpassing dealership levels even. If you're paying more than 500-600 in labor for a TB/WP you're getting worked over. The cam seals in '98-00 cars are a whole other bag of chips to replace as the cams have to come out, and frankly unless they're leaking they're not worth replacing imho.
You need to find a shop that is actually familiar with the 98+ GS/SC/LS400 engines, or a shop that does a lot of work on tundras. (toyota dealerships aren't a bad idea if you have a local one that's willing to work on your car)
