What is the proper maintenance on one?

Change ATF every 30,000 miles?

or is it Lexus's official recommendation? (not sure what that is)

I drain and fill it every other oil change, it is as easy as changing the oil, and use T-IV fluid from the dealership (Mazda and Volvo dealerships typically have it too) - it's actually Mobil 3309 rebottled, so that would be fine as well, no other substitutes though.

these Aisin A-series trannys in the Lexus LS models are legendary for their reliability, beginning with the famed 30-41LE (A341E) which made its worldwide debut in the 1990 LS400/Celsior

On a technical note, what exactly did Lexus do to the tranny to make it last so long? My LS400 had 407,000 miles on the original transmission and I even ran it at the drag strip every once in a while. Still shifted like the day I bought it in 2007.
