Performance Air Filter replacement on LS 400 1992
Hello Guys,
I had recently replaced the stock air filter with a SIMOTA performance air filter. The car sound awesome now but I have noticed that my MPG have gone bad by 30 Miles per tank. I heard that the air filter increases the performance but does no affect the mileage. I had installed an aftermarket SIMOTA brand air filter as i heard they are better then K&N filter. What could have gone wrong.
Thanks.

Changing an air filter confuses the ECU. It is not easy for you to get better results only changing the filter.
Things are not so simple as you expect. You need to have a capability to rewrite the data table in the ROM too.

Just throw the whole air intake away and stretch a sock over the throttle body!....
...But on a serious note, did you keep the factory air box? Or does the "simota" filter go in the factory spot?

@ YoshiMan: I haven't thrown away the factory air box. But I have used the same pipe and sensor and just fixed the cone simota filter in replacement of the boxed stock filter. I did not get what you mean by "stretch a sock over the throttle body".
@ Yamae: What do I have to do to have a compatibility rewrite in the ROM of the ECU.
Thank you for the replies.

There are many items you need to do. You have to analyze the current data table first reading the ROM. But problem is that the ROM data cannot be read easily without the special equipments. Only white hackers can do that other than some Denso engineers. Are you one of those white hackers?

I noticed when I used an aftermarket "cone type" filter with out the stock air box, it raises intake temps (heat soak) and would bog down the motor. It may sound a little better but you are actually getting less performance. I would put the stock box and a new OEM type filter in. The Jbrady intake mod wouldn't hurt. I ran a K&N filter with the Jbrady mod and it was nice but I just don't like oil filters like the k&n. The car is much happier with the stock filter and box.
