Just wanted to quickly introduce myself to the forums, recent owner of a 1991 LS400 which has a set of lowering springs of unknown variety. Have owned my fair share of cars: 2004 Impreza wagon, 74 Benz 280, 91 hardtop Miata, 96 Audi A4 and most recently a 2008 Acura TL. Haven't done much of my own work on cars, perhaps the most extensive being replacing springs and struts, custom subwoofer install, sway bars and engine/tranny mounts, simple bolt on stuff like downpipes and turbo replacements. This is my first Lexus, so the reputation for reliability give me the feeling that I will not need to get under the hood much.

My 91 LS400 displays symptoms of the usual things to be expected of a 20+ year old Lexus. Power steering pump leaks a bit (parts on order to rebuild that next weekend), trunk has some moisture, antenna doesn't work but the motor is audible, LCD for climate control is burnt out and a few bulbs on the instrument panel are also burnt out. Other than a couple of scratches and dings (and a clean carfax) the car runs well. It sits really low though, and I am considering eventually getting some coilovers for ease with adjusting ride height and firmness but so far have not found anyone with a 91 set up with EDFC...?

Overall happy with the car, maybe not the 4spd transmission but this is the first auto I have owned since my 74 Benz so it will take some getting used to. I definitely love the character that comes with its age and I'm a sucker for the rectangular lights and boxy body (was 4 yrs old when this car was first produced, and likely fell in love with it from day 1 of seeing it on the road).

Welcome to the club and congrats on your purchase. Hope it treats you well...and all the better if you love the car than you won't mind taking care of it and dealing with the little things that do go wrong. With proper care it will last a long time.

Thanks! It's definitely going to be a labour of love, although I would expect none quite as challenging as when the alternator on my 96 Audi A4 needed replacing! Talk about a nightmare.

I'll have to post pics up after I do the power steering pump and drive belt.

Welcome aboard!

If you want to do you own work on it, the best investment you can make is in the factory service manuals from Toyota. They are a bit pricey (about $200 usually) but the Toyota manuals are the best ones i've personally used.

Thanks YoshiMan! That's a worthy investment for sure. There's probably a ton of life left in the car and with proper upkeep I hope it just keeps going and going.

Haha thanks. Lexls is actually the site that made me decide that an LS400 was what I wanted to buy. Kind of a weird way to end up committing to a car purchase. I was looking for info on the car and found lexls during my search.

Hey man, coilovers would be a sweet way to go. I have a '91 LS400 as well as you, and installing coilovers was easy as friggin pie. I have Megan EZs in mine and it rides smooth as stock!
