Default Factory Air Suspension Cheater on 98 LS400

It is not rocket science to figure out, and I am sure I am not the first to try this, but...in order to get the car as low as possible using the OEM adjustment arms you have to get the arm lower than the factory settings will allow. I made a short bracket for each corner which effectively moved the arm position about 1/2" lower and the results are obvious. Only problem is the car rides like crap since the air bags are almost completely deflated - but I expected that.

I was hoping that in this position I could cheat and use the "Hi" setting when I want to return the suspension to a more driveable height but that didn't work. So, this mod is not ideal but it sure looks good and as long as the bags don't blow...I'm happy with it. Cheers. Hiroshi

If that car were on the LA roadways a month some odd. OP wants an excuse for some coils and bags.

I knew you would be the first to reply. What you don't know is that I did this back in December and nothing has happened yet, so....what now?

Uhm, it doesn't go back up - unless I remove the brackets and reset the adjustment arms to factory specs.

Hmmmm, not sure about LA roads but SD has some of the worst roads in the U.S., I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere before. Anyway, it's no different than driving your car if it was bagged or on coils - avoid dips, potholes and speedbumps and make people driving behind you go nutz! Cheers.

you got lucky and beat the odds. They'll die soon enough, i've seen it happen to countless stock bagged LS', both 400s and 430s.

Only way you can make it last is with a controller, dropping down just to park and only driving at stock height.

they will eventually blow, think about it. you are putting more stress on parts that are 1) not designed to function at that height and load, and 2) are 15 years old!

i do applaud you in your ingenuity!

Engineer at his best. GJ dude, tbh as far as i can see it, stock air shocks seem to blow anyway, sooner or later. This will suffice for the time being

Yes as stated by PD you will need a controller to make them last, and if that not much longer. Your pushing the bags capacity way beyond their limit. It might look nice, but your car might not look as nice god forbids they blow while on the freeway doing 80... It does look better but I wouldn't mess around too much with OEM items that concerns safety. Why not just go for coil overs? Or a real airbag set up???

Thanks for your concern (and everyone else). I actually set it back up a few days ago since my inlaws are in town and they would def. get seasick bumping around in the backseat. So, it's back to LS400 4x4 for awile

Thanks. Yea, I've been doing the VIP thing since '92 when I lived in Japan and sometimes you can get great results with low cost and some good 'ol American ingenuity. Never said it was safe or smart, though I should be old enough now to know better

Ok, so let's say I am finally ready to make the investment in some Megan EZ coils - would they get my car as low as it is now using my garage engineering technique?

I'm a little bit lower than that on Megans... I'm almost tucking 18 rims in the rear. I tuck about half of the tire almost to the lip.
