I have a 1990 LEXUS LS400 AND I CANT SEEM TO REV OVER 2000 RPM AT ANY GEAR. i do need a new ecu because of random stalls my car gets randomly (rarely) Do you guys think the ecu is sending my car error codes that is why i cant rev the engine to its full potential? I also checked the throttle body and there is some carbon build up which i will clean up but i dont understand why cant my car run over 2000rpm. i want this car at its full v8 potential appreciate the support

Sounds like a safe mode to me. The safe mode of the ECU limits the engine to rev at 2000rpm.

Are there any similarity with this?

i am not sure but will update after fixing the ecu. Do you think its the ecu or might be carbon build up? when i drive i cant past 2000rpm which sucks.

and can you change it back to regular mode? how do you take it out from safe mode?

The disconnection of the battery for 10 minutes resets it. Without fixing the problem, the ECU enters the safe mode very quickly and you can not rev higher than 2000rpm.

The ECU enters the safe mode when sub processor detects internal conflicts. It only can be fixed replacing the failed ECU to a good one or a repaired one.

well heres the thing the ecu has problems already so im paying this place 80$ to get my ecu touched up. the capacitors needs to be touched up because of some leakage. they should be able to fix it up good as new right? usually if you go to driftworks or some companies that specialize in ecu they should be able to get the problem out of safe mode? by the way thanks so much for helping me

So you are another LS400 owner whose ECU has leaking capacitors.

There comes a person like you next to next. Again I must suggest old LS400 owners to replace capacitors as a preventive maintenance strongly before they have serious problems and upset like you.

The leaking liquid often damages the board and replace them quickly with low ESR capacitors as are recommended by LScowboyLS and me at the thread "All-my-crazy-lexus-issues-solved!! (ECU-leaking capacitor)" here.

well i am paying 80$ for the fix so they better make that ecu run good as new!! i really want to experience a full v8 feel!

$80 sounds way too cheap if they are doing the job right and using the correct premium low-ESR capacitors as explained in my leaking ECU capacitor tutorial

well the price does say 80 well maybe without tax! online driftworks does it for 80$. and how do i clean up the catalytic converter? will seafoam or lucas do the job? i need this thing to also pass the smog

First see if they are plugged. If it is then replace them

before you blow your $80 for a botch hack job on your ECU, ask them specifically which brand and model of caps they are using, and post them here, and if they can't tell you over email or the phone, then run like hell from that place! - a word to the wise!

to check the cats, you need to do a simple back pressure test at the pre-cat O2 sensor, and might be a great time to replace those as well, since you already have one out! - you can get the OEM NipponDenso O2 sensors cheap on amazon.com
