I recently acquired a 1998 LS400 and it was making a rumbling sound in park at 2000 to 2200 rpm and on up. It seemed like something was out of balance.

After reading the forum messages here, I saw that others were experiencing the same thing, with the cause being a worn out transmission mount.

So I had the Lexus dealership inspect the mount (while they were doing the timing belt, water pump, front seals) and sure enough he said it was like broken in half--or at least part of it was broken in half.

So I had it replaced for $50 labor and around $65 for the part. I could of done it myself with my boyfriend but I figured since they were discounting the labor (normally $102) I might as well have them do it.

It runs like new now, with absolutely no rumble in park nor the bassy rumble down the road. You can barely hear the engine run now.

they charged you the minimum on labor, 1/2hr @ shop rate of ~$100-110/hr for something that probably took the mechanic 10-15minutes with the car on the lift

the going rate for the part is ~$40-45 through a vendor. (oem)


But at least it's done, glad to hear it solved your issue.

I looked everywhere online, etc., and the cheapest I could find a new OEM trans mount for this car was $59. Also $102 is their minimum labor rate, I had to haggle with them to go down to $50 because I knew it was something that would only take them 10 minutes I was spending $2500 anyways on the timing belt, water pump, crankshaft seal, camshaft seals, 3 pulleys, 2 valve assemblies, 4 wheel alignment. I figured, what's an extra $50 lol.
