Default My "new" 91 LS 400 - couple of problems

But I LOVE this car. I was always a Maxima driver - looking to buy another one when I spotted this lovely thing. I think it has nearly every bell and whistle available that year. I wanted to ask advice about the couple of things that ARE wrong with it.

The worst problem is that none of the door speakers works. The sub woofer and the tweeters work great, but there is nothing from the door speakers. (Assuming there ARE door speakers in there!) We have checked the fuses, all good, and removed the dash and checked the connection into the main unit, no problems. Can anyone give me suggestions as to what to do next, before taking it to a stereo shop and spending a fortune? Bells and whistles are nice, but you can only play with the power seat belt height and non-working cell phone so much....the Stereo is every hour of every day!

The second issue is the LCD display on the dash for temp and time. It is very dark and mostly unreadable. You can barely see the temp and can not see the time at all. It looks as though some cleaning fluid got down in the bottom, or perhaps someone pressed too hard while cleang it. Does anyone have a guess as to how much that will cost to repair/replace? Hubby is very good at finding needed parts in salvage yards; is this an option?

Thanks in advance; I love this forum!

Default A little help

Hi Charhall,

Welcome to the forum! I also have a 91 LS 400 and they are great cars, but like anything else, after time some things break. I am afraid I can't help you on the speakers, that hasn't happened to me yet. On the A/C and clock display, that is a common point of failure and I know of two ways to obtain a replacement. One is to get directly in touch with a company called Mikado who will rebuild your unit or send you a rebuilt one with a core charge which they will refund when you get yours.
Mikado Eng. Phone - (650) 615-9966
1435-C Huntington Ave
S. San Francisco, CA 94080 Many people on the forums have used them and have always been very satisfied.

Or you can go to Lexus parts mall www.lexuspartsmall.com and they can obtain a rebuilt one for you.

Or you can always go the Lexus dealer and pay a lot for a new unit.

Once you get the unit, follow the instructions here http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalLexusLS400str.htm to get to it.

And here is a link with instructions on how to get to the speakers http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremov...400FDrPnlR.htm and http://carstereohelp.com/stereoremov...400RDrPnlR.htm (thanks to retrodrive for the links to the links)

Good Luck and let us know how it goes!

I have the same 2 problems wrong with my car.

I've decided to cope with the problem of the LCD Climate control display.

As for the speakers: only the tweeters, sub, and the two right speakers would play when I played a cassette, but all speakers worked when I played the radio, so I got an FM Modulated CD changer and the problem was solved (because I don't use the cassette)

As far as the speakers are concerned, you might not have any in the door or there're blown out, have them checked.

Just don't try to pry off the cloth speaker grill...you need to remove the whole door panel to get to the speakers.
