Cool Check Engine Light - Is it worth keeping LS 400?

ok -

1999 LS 400 with 299,200 miles. Check engine light has been on for 2+ years, but Florida does not require emission test (hey a year in Afghanistan I other things to worry about than a check engine light). Now back in Connecticut which does. Connecticut emissions will fail you if check engine light is on, irregardless of the actual emission reading. So you have to clear the code. (Yes I did try disconnecting battery ect)

Dealer says it is a hard code error on 3 gear solenoid. Recommends drop tranmission replace solenoid. - $1000 with part. 90% of time it will correct issue.

Engine still runs great.

Anyone else have similar issue? How resolved?

Or should I cash in my chips for a '08 LS 460?

Look for the DLC connector in the engine compartment. And use a papet clip and jump pin TE1 and E1 and count the check engine light flashes.

that only works for pre '95 LS400s with OBDI....

OP, the trans doesnt need to be dropped for solenoid replacement. find a trustworthy independent and get a 2nd opinion.

The code comes up as a third gear solenoid error. Dealer tried sending a message thru to re-activate... no luck. He has been very fair with me through the years.
Said if solenoid doesn't work could need to replace ECM - another $1500 - ugh
.

Would a nation chain like MAACO be a good option for 2d opinion?

no. i would recco looking in the regional forums for a good independent.

I had a solenoid and harness replaced right when I got my LS years and years ago and at a quality indpt. i was in for WAY less than what you're talking about. the trans pan needs to be dropped, nothing else.

Your dealer sounds sketch because he's tallking about doing a $1000+ service that MAY fix the problem, if not you need a $1500 ECU?? and you think he's being fair? lol.

Spoke with local independent guy I have used before, he has been more than fair with me in the past and will give me an 2nd look. The engine still runs great and I average 26-28 mpg in summer, 22-24 in winter. Has a few cosmetic dings with 299+ miles and 3 kids who drive.Looking for excuse to keep it. Thx

could very easily be the harness for the solenoid, as when its the solenoid itself you lose use of 1 or more gears.

Is there a method to test if it is the harness?

Good write up on replacing shift solenoids here including the 63 code you are having and not costing over $1000.00.
