Default Do Wires from Wiring Harness Control Trunk Latch Closing?

I am looking for a solution as to why my trunk lid latch won't close. I've already checked the fuse, which apparently works, since the same fuse controls whether the door to the gas tank pops open for filling up at the gas station (it does).

In another thread, someone said their trunk lid latch started working after they repaired a broken wire in the wire harness (they resoldered one of the wires). My question is what the wire harness wires control. There is a wire coming from the harness that hooks into the trunk lid latch..the wire has a plastic 'end' on it that looks similar to the end of a wire that plugs into a telephone jack. On the lid latch itself, I can see a c-shaped hook that moves back and forth. That hook should snap closed when the lid closes and hold the trunk lid closed. That's the part that is apparently not doing its job. Is this hook controlled by that wiring harness wire, or does this c-shaped hook operate independent from the wiring harness wire, e.g., completely mechanically?

Tx for any suggestions.
