Which year transmissions will fit my 96 LS400?
Hi guys,
After 190,000 miles the trans in my 96 LS400 has finally called it a day.
I have been searching the forum for hours and I have not been able to come up with a definitive answer as to what year will fit.
From what I have read the 95 96 97 will all bolt straight up.
Does anything else bolt up without too much drama?
and if they do...Is there any benefit to getting a later model trans?

here is some GREAT news for you - you happen to own the car with the MOST RELIABLE transmission series ever made (Aisin A340E and the later A650E) - what this means for you is that there are THOUSANDS of these at junkyards across America at stupidly low prices (because almost no one ever needs one)
because they are so bulletproof and hence there is no demand, you should be able to find one in nearly new condition (like 50K-80K miles) out of a wrecked LS400 for $300 or less!

try www.car-part.com (the largest online database of junkyards)
PS - California features the stupid price on everything, time to visit your kin-folk in Alabama - lmao
PSS - PRO TIP: junkyards are VERY negotiable on items that they have a lot of and that never sell very often!

I called on every one on car-part that had under 100K on it. They were either sold or $700+ by the time I got it here to Komifornia.
I found one semi local (within 200 miles) for $800 OTD but I also read some horror stories about their after sales service online.
It looks like I will be shipping one from the other side of the country.

I am drawing a blank at most places on anything with under 100k miles on it.
Does anyone here have one for sale?....I would rather give my money to a trusted forum member anyway!!

Sticka,
Car-part.com is the best source for finding parts at junkyards.
We rebuild salvage cars so I am familiar with junk yards.
You can call a local trustworthy junkyard, and they can source a tranny for you. What you will likely find is that all they are going to do is buy one from another junk yard, get it a little less than you could mark it up and then charge you a little more than you could buy it direct from the yard they got it from.
One thing, not all yards are on car-part. There are a couple other systems used by yards to locate parts which are not available to the public. You might find a good low mileage one that way.
I think some yards offer warranty's on transmissions. I for one would want to have documentation of the mileage. Might go so far as to pull a carfax on the VIN and see what the mileage was when the car was junked.
Good Luck
Why do you think your tranny went out? Anything the rest of us can learn from.

I found one that is semi local. If all goes well I will pick it up tomorrow.
Mine was slipping. It is my wifes car. I drove it a month or so ago and it slipped a little, I meant to check the fluid but I forgot all about it. She did not notice the slip and kept driving it untill it died.
Complete user error and not the cars fault.

the only user error is that the original owner didn't change the fluid regularly, but even so, 190K is much farther than 90% of all automatics go, so it served you well - you just didn't get the 300K that is *possible* if it is very well maintained and never abused (and the most abusive thing you can do is the old "Burt Reynolds" dropping it in drive after backing up without coming to a COMPLETE stop first)

The fluid that came out of it was almost black and pretty nasty. As far as I know it had never been changed. It had definately not been done by me and we have owned it since it had 75k on it.

It was leaking and I did not top it up so it ran low on fluid and then it started to slip. I think that if I had have topped it up and fixed the leak that it would still be running strong.
