Does this sound happen when the VSS is off? When you say nothing in the trunk, that means no spare tire either?

You'll want to dig (search) a little also. Those are copied from a write up on a first gen. and have been propogated throughout other threads.

I've been putting off replacing my rear trailing arm bushings because they don't make the correct size for one of them. A user bought poly's and turned them down in a lathe to make them fit.

Mine arn't real bad, but I don't get that thud sound after I changed my motor mounts. So I've been putting the fix off. I'll do a write up when I get the motivation.

Oh, and the only item in the trunk is the spare. But, it is properly secured.

Thanks for the bushing pics. Not sure if I have time to change them though, as someone wants to buy the car this weekend.

Vehicle speed sensor.

How do you turn it off anyway?

Okay that's what I was thinking.

The Tracs switch decided not to work the other day, but I believe it still did it before

The sound is the most prevalent when you "punch it." And that's if you were coasting and THEN decided to punch it.

Under pretty normal driving it shifts fine and doesn't make that thud. Sometimes I get a "firm" downshift from 3-2 and then from 2-1. Other times I don't notice it. I mean, that's the only issue with the car. i wouldn't hesitate to drive it to the West Coast tomorrow, if I had to.

I'm gentle on my cars, but its an issue if someone wants to buy it, I think. Most people are going to freak out and assume its the transmission going bad and run away.

not if they know anything about the LS400 - it has the most bulletproof transmission in automotive history!

not even my stupidest friends could break this Aisin marvel of engineering reliability!

VJZ, did you ever figure out the culprit? I too am noticing a slight rear end thud when I let off the accelerator and coast, and then get back on the gas again. I am leaning towards the diff mounts. I'll have to get under there and take a look when the weather gets decent.

I just got some service done for other items on my car but I asked the mechanic about this particular thump that's being discussed as I too experienced it.
How? I quickly step on the gas and there's a thump coming from the rear end of the car.
Vibration? Very very minimal and possibly translating to the shifter (i already replaced the trans mount) but Im pretty sure it's something else.
Suggestion? The rear differential bushings/cushions need to be replaced. The parts can be found on sewell lexus' parts online site. With the CL discount, they're about $120 shipped if im not mistaken.
These are next on my to-do list!

Keep in mind that I haven't experienced this issue on the LS in particular but what you are describing (thud upon hard acceleration while moving coming from rear in RWD car) is 99% of he time in my experience the "guibo" or rubber flex disc on the driveshaft. It is a very comin wear item on bmw's and alot of other RWD cars. I may have another name but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Cool good info. I'm headed to the auto parts store looking for a guibo. I better not get laughed at though. "Uh excuse me......where do you guys keep your guibo's"?
