I too have hairline cracks in the clear plastic covering over the wood on my '99 LS steering wheel.

Does anyone know what kind of plastic this is?

Would it be possible (for a professional paint shop) to use a clear lacquer (or other paint that will adhere to plastic) to fill the cracks?

it's not plastic, it's actual polished wood.
american stitches fixes the cracks iirc.

If and when my gets worse, I have that service done to my wheel. I've got several cracks but are more noticeable to the touch rather than visual. Luckily the tone of the wood has not faded.
