Cool Vibration at 80 mph....2000 LS 400 without air ride...

Hey guys when I took a road trip this weekend I noticed that my car had a vibration at 80mph.....if it was at 70 mph it would be smooth as glass.....at 80 mph you'd feel the vibration esp on the right front...then at 90 it would be fairly smooth again....

Any ideas? My tires are pretty old and have about 50% tread though likely more than 5 years on them....

Thanks and let me know
Turbo

the tires probably need to be rebalanced. (And checked over to make sure there's no bubbles/cracks from age.) the LS is very sensitive to wheel balance.

Do you feel the vibration more in the steering wheel or the seat? Does the car vibrate at any otter speeds or in neutral while revving it?

My '97 has a similar issue, though at 70-ish. I feel it in the seat more than the wheel. I'd get the tires rebalanced, but with winter approaching, the 20"s are about to come off anyway.

one of my 99's did that, but strut rod bushings fixed it... mine was 78 to 83

I would suspect balancing first and then tires. Check the rims first to see if maybe you hit a pothole too hard or a curb and there is a dent. The tires could be bad but they would have to be ready for the junk pile if they are making you feel that at 80.Of course if you go the speed limit you won't have to check anything.

Have your tires balanced on a road force balancing machine - that will tell you if your tires are good. If you still have vibration after successful road force balancing, your strut rods bushings may be worn out. How many miles are on your car?

I'm having my strut rods/bars and bushings replaced for the second time during the 150,000 mile service in a few months. The original ones were thoroughly worn out when I had them replaced at about 83,000 miles and I'm not going to let them go that long this time.

My old M3 used to vibrate between 80 and 90... but up past 90, especially as you pulled past 105 it was smooth as glass. Or maybe as I approached 120 my heart racing overcame the shimmy...

Too bad over here in the seattle area you are lucky to manage 5 under the speed limit....

like everyone said just go get the tires rotated and balanced, I had the same issue until I swapped off the stock rims for aftermarket apparently the last owner hit the worst pot hole in the world and warped the rim,

Vibrations are rarely a problem with one specific part.
It is a combination of many small tolerances that cause the problem .
A bad wheel and tire is rarely a problem but you will feel it if a bushing is also worn and a joint .
Have a good tech check each one at all points by stressing each joint to find it .
