Default Thinking of purchasing a 2003 LS430

I'm seriously considering purchasing one within the next few weeks.

What I'd like to know is if there is anything about your LS430s that any of you dont like - any issues, any problems, or just rants about the car. Anything you'd like changed?

Also, what is it that you really do like about the car? What really stands out about the car if you were to choose one or two things?

Anything I should look out for before buying? Any hints you all can give me?

Thanks in advance!

The thing I like most about my LS430 is the comfort. Very smooth, quiet ride. Excellent seat comfort, especially the drivers seat, which has a lot of possible adjustments. Very roomy interior. Also, something I never see mentioned, the car is easier to enter and exit than the competition due to it being taller. Besides comfort, the other big advantages of the car are the reliability and dealer treatment. My car has very few options. I didn't think I needed any of the UL options. If the NAV system in the 2003s is like the one in my wife's SC430, I would consider it useless, but I know that many owners would vehemently disagree with me on this. You won't go wrong buying an LS430.

Black looks the best, but it will require a lot more frequent washings than the silver would. Black with the chrome wheels is a dynamite combination.

Question

What's the "Ultra Premium Package"? I don't see such a thing listed on the Lexus web site or on Edmunds.

oh, i think the package names are worded differently in canada.. this is what the ultra premium has:

ULTRA PREMIUM PACKAGE & SEMI ANILINE
9 Speakers, Rear Audio Controls, Radio Data System (RDS), Mark Levinson Audio, 240-watt Sound System, Front & Rear Auto Climate Control, Laser Cruise Control, Automatic Door Closer, , Semi-Aniline Seat Material, Heated and Air Conditioned Front Seats, Rear Seat Massage Settings, Rear Power Seats, Front Air Suspension, Rear Air Suspension, P225/55R17, Dunlop, Performance Summer Radials, Side Laminated Glass, , Sunshade on Rear Door Glass.

The only thing im not getting on it is the DVD navi... which is an extra $4,500 cdn.. but i am getting the 17" Chrome Plated Wheels thrown in for free.

<<Another concern is the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Whenever you drive with the rear windows down, the cross-winds create an extremely low-"bass like" frequency that can sometimes hurt or irritate your ears. >

I've noticed that on the 99 GS300 and the 2002 ES300. It must me a Lexus thing...

Not just a lexus thing, it's just a resonance frequency set up by standing waves and other scientific terms I've forgotten since getting out of school. It happens in MBs, Hondas, Toyotas, and in a wide variety of cars. The trick, generally, is to pop open the sunroof a bit, or to open the front windows a bit as well, and that takes care of the issue.

I don't believe it's just a Lexus thing either... The low frequency noise you refer to is called "buffeting." It's the reason that many manufacturers actually put a "pop-up" lip on their sunroofs that extends when the sunroof is open. It redirects the air from creating what I would guess is a vacuum as it crosses the top of the vehicle, "pulling" out the air from inside the vehicle.

Same thing with the rear windows in a vehicle. If the created vacuum doesn't have somewhere behind it to pull air from, it creates a turbulence like condition.

Boy, maybe it's too late to say this. But my LS430 has a big problem when driving in wet conditions. The computer module goes dead after a couple of hours on highway in rainy day. I lost gas gauge (dead), hi/lo beam control (only lo beam works), sound volume control (dead), trunk release dead (only key works), memory seats gone, instrument panel lights are in full intensity only. The condition can be temporarily cleared if you restart the engine. The problems may persist for few days until the moistures are completely out of the system.

Stopping in wet condition seems to have problem too. Watch the rear end. It may fishtail. I had alignment done at 10K miles. Lexus still cannot resolve the rainy day problems. They replaced the battery, believe or not.
