so, ive been noticing lately that there a signifcant amount of body flex on my 91. especially over speed bumps.

im going to put the theory to the test tomarrow and tighten every nut and bolt under the car.

and yes, its body flex.....the doors creak ever so much when going over the speed bumps....specifically when half the car goes over the speed bumps.

I will post the results when I get home tomarrow evening.

well, the results are in.......

big improvement. no more creaky doors over speed bumps and such.

I pulled the car in, got it in the air, and looked.

I tightened 10 total.
NOT THAT ANY WERE by definition "loose", but they all went about a turn and a half. the 4 that tightned the most were for the crossmember, and those are 4 nuts.

so, no mre creaking from the doors over bumps. it wasnt a whole lot, just enough for me to notice.


there was nothing on the rear. it was all up front.


this is on a 91.

hmm ill try that out next time im under the car, the subframes are supposed to be re-torqued as part of regular maint (every 30 or 60k miles iirc) but are too often ignored. do the fronts too!

I did do the fronts. and I checked all of the rears. everything on the rear was nice and tight.
anything that tightened up was all up front. I was under the car 5 months or so for the rear strut rod knuckle bushings. I went over those back then I never thought to check the fronts.
and the 4 that tightened most were the nuts on the crossmember....2 per side.


if you have some body flex, this is certainly something I would reccomend in a heartbeat.

Can someone post up pics of the bolts that need to be re-torqued? Also, what are the torque specs for these bolts?

You don't really need pics, it's just every bolt that is in the frame itself. Especially the 4 that are in the crossmember. The subframe is the big square frame in the front that the engine sits on. Just look on both sides fo the car at the frame and start tightening everything. Torque is.......tight.

there are 4 nuts on the crossmember.....the crossmember is that thing the rack and pinion is attached to.....

so there are 4 nuts, 2 per side, and there are 2 bolts as well.

then, the steut rod mounting brackets at the front of the car, have 4 bolts each.

and at the very front of the car, there are 2 plates with holes in them....these are for tow hook purposes.....there a bolt above them....one on each side.

I just took some photos. I could email them to anyone who wants to host them or whatever.
my tablet doesnt work all that well trying to do so myself.

and I just used my impact gun, and just blipped the trigger a couple times and just watched. I had to be carefull un those nut, because my gun will yank those threads right off.

if the nut or bolt is bigger than 14mm, re-torque it, it's probably load bearing....
