Default LS400 rear end thumping

I have a strange problem with my 90 LS400.

randomly it develops a really bad thump at the back, its almost like something is severly out of balance/the wheel is going to fall off.

The problem is, it happens at random and can be at any speed. It does not seem to matter if the car is warm or cool.

Once it starts it will still do it when the trans is in neutral, and as the car slows down it gets slower and more violent.

I thought at first it could have been wheel bearings, so I removed the hub (what a bastard of a job) and checked the bearing, it has no play and made no noise.

What else could it be?

Honestly,,,it sounds like you may have a problem with the differential. When was the last time the fluid was checked/changed?
