LS400 Wheels Erosion - Exchange?
Dear Lexus LS owners,
I have a 2000 LS400 with stock 16" chrome wheels…the chrome is starting to peel off due to the snow and salt in New York City. The erosion constantly drops the pressure from tires and messes up the balance of the wheels. What do you suggest I do? - I have Lexus SC430- 18" rims which is a possibility for replacement, I can also purchase 2003 LS430 17" RIMS and replace my stock 16" rims.
NYC has insane roads - potholes, etc. compared to the rest of the USA. I am worried that my 18" or even 17" rims will break. What exactly happens with the ride when you go from 16" to 18" rims?
Do you suggest I do this or take a different route? Please advise.

Well your question depends on what you plan on doing with the car, and what your goals are for it.
If you gonna leave it relatively stock, and do no modding to it, then of the 2 choices you mentioned, I would go with the LS430 wheels; personally don't care for the SC ones'. This will allow you to still retain the near stock ride as well as afford you plenty of rubber underneath to tackle the roads in NY. Plenty of my fellow NELOC(forum located at the very bottom of the forum listing from main page) members, who live in your area have 18, 19, and even 20 inch rims on their cars and drive them every day (carefully).
To answer your question on what happens to your ride quality from 16=>18,,, the ride can actualy still be VERY close to the same. Tire profile is gonna be key here b/c the larger the rim,, the smaller the sidewall on the rubber is gonna be in comparison. You WILL have to drive a little more concious of the road if you don't want to constantly play,,,"I bent a rim". With a 2K LS,, you should not have any problems at all, unless you plan on lowering the suspension a bit and then the fun will begin; not too painful but you will have to alter your driving a bit.. If you plan on lowering the car, you need to do some research (these forums are a very viable source of information)

Thank you trukn1!
I am not planning on lowering my car or planning on doing any mods.
My other choice that I didn't mention is continue riding on the stock 16" Chrome wheels and refinish them for about $100/wheel.
If you were me, what would you do? OPEN TO ANY SUGGESTIONS! Thanks all!

So on my 2000 LS400 I am putting in 2001 LS430 17" wheels
when I go to tirerack.com and put in 2001 LS430 17" wheels - they give me this 225/55-17 --> Is this NOT correct for my car?
Thanks very much!

Aren't the stock 17's 17 x 7.5 or 17 x 8? It shouldn't be a problem if they are. I know that the LS430 uses 18 x 7.5 and comes with a 245 tire standard. I have used 245/50/17 on my first gen LS400 using a 17 x 8 wheel and I had no issues. Anyway, listen to PureDrifter and verify before purchasing.
Good luck!
