Default How to turn the camshaft pulley to match timing mark on the belt?

1996 LS400.
I am in the middle of putting the new timing belt back.
Before I took the old belt off, I turned the crankshaft pulley at TDC, and the marks on the left and right camshaft pulley matched perfectly with the marks on the engine. I then turned crank pulley 50 degree pass the TDC.
I removed the old belt and compared the new belt with the old belt, the timing marks on the old belts also matched with the marks on the new belt.
I accidentally turn the L camshaft pulley when the belt is off. When I put the new belt in, The CR line of the new belt was put at Crankshaft pulley mark (at about 7:00). But the L line timing mark of the belt did not match with the left camshaft timing mark. It looks like that the left cam pulley is several tooth pass the timing mark on the belt.
So my question is:
Can I turn the left camshaft pulley clockwise about 350 degree to get the timing mark match?
It is very difficult to turn the left cam pulley counterclockwise now.

Thanks

What Should I do to get the timing right?
Thanks

It means that I will need to turn the left campulley about 350 degree, almost one circle. So it won't damage anything inside the engine. Am I wright about it?

On this write-up, the author also mention that he/she messed with the left cam. He corrected it by turning the crank at 0, and the cams to their marks on the engine. But he did not mention how he did it (clockwise or counterclockwise).

DO NOT turn the cam 350 degrees! You will **** your engine.

if you dis not set the tensioner already.........

so this, if your going in order by the guide you gave a link to...do this.

pull the bottom/crank cover off.

take the belt off completely.

realign all your marks

install belt. most likely, the belt should be installed on the crank set with belt mark to crank mark. working your way counter clockwise to install the belt....making sure that the belt marks line up with the cam marks.
so now you should be .......crank, right cam, left cam.
once the belt is routed , you should have some slight play/slack because the tensioner is not set. use your finger and push on the belt as if your finger was the tensioner.

does everything line up? all marks......belt,crank and cams?

if so, youre good.

you do not have to completely spin every a certain amount of turns.....with the belt off, you can turn the left cam backwards 360 and the right cam clockwise 20 times. all that matters is that the lines match up. so even if one cam is ahead of the mark say like 10 teeth, you can rotate it counter clockwise to realign.

and check, recheck, triple check that all the marks line up BEFORE you pull the tensioner pin.
even half a tooth off can cause issues.

the firat timing belt is the scariest, after 25 or so, they are cake.

Tell us how you turned the cam, and how far. You have some play in the cams at the 50 degree position; how much I don't know. I would think its fine to turn it back the same way, if you are absolutely sure it moved and you are not somehow mistaken.

Counterclockwise, wouldn't that be crank, left cam, right cam? The left cam is on your right.

Yes, I did turn the left side (Driver side) cam clockwise by accident (I don't know by how much, maybe less than 50 degree), and I immediately turn it back.
Now the left cam mark passes the belt mark by 4 to 5 teeth. Can I forcefully turn the cam counterclockwise to match the mark on the belt?

Is this the way to realign the timing?
1. Turn the crank counterclockwise 50 degree to 0.
2. turn the left cam counter clockwise to align the mark on cam with the mark on engine.
3.do the same for the right cam.

going to try to simplify this........

belt off

set all 3 marks........cams and crank

install belt....crank, driver cam,passenger cam
hold tension on belt with finger, everything line up?
pull tensioner pin.
install crank cover
rotate engine 2 full revolutions by crank bolt.
should be 0 on crank cover and cams should be on marks

man, if you were phoenix, I would lovingly show you how
