Well you are going to test drive it right? You'll have to get it started with jumpers.

Did the timing belt ever get done?

I'd say $800 is too much, but I can't see it. The thing with buying a car that doesn't run is, you can't tell what else is wrong with it like the tranny, A/C, brakes, exhaust, suspension bushings, and any of the 100s of sensors that are on these cars. Ya just need to remember that most new parts are very expensive for these. I would probably buy it for $500 not running but I know more about these then I did before I got mine. If you haven't repaired these before and you do buy it "non running" you should get a service manual for it (or Alldata) to help you diagnose whatever problem it has. GL with the purchase.

When it comes to buying a car that isn't running the first thing you would always want to do is hook the car up to a diagnostic and test it, although it would not tell you everything that is wrong with the car you will recieve some sort of inclination to were the car stands. These cars are not the easiest to work on because just to get to a part you will have to remove about 3 other parts and mechanics always seem to use the name as leverage to sky rocket there prices. But there is a really helpful website you will definently be interested in LexLS.com

I think the prices you mentioned are reasonable. $500-$800. If you have more budget available I'd suggest the '95-'97.
