Is this normal behaviour: I start the car (99 LS400, 84K), and drive gently down a mild downhill road, and it goes up to around 2500RPM before doing that first change into second gear. Only does this the first time each day, when its cold I guess. Is something wrong? Otherwise everything else is perfect.

Never mind I should have searched a bit harder first - a few threads report this as normal engine-warning behaviour. But feel free to let me know if your does the same.

My '99 does exactly the same thing. I've had other cars that do this as well but it's much more noticeable in the LS400. Based on other posts I've read it's related to the temp of the tranny fluid, designed to extend transmission life.

yes, also could be due to old trans fluid. should be changed with fresh toyota Tiv every ~30k miles.

Yeah i've been doing this with the older 96. The 99 is the same right: (?)

Engine off
Drain the 2 qts, close off
Top up 2 qts
Run engine through gears
Repeat a few times.

that's the way some people do it, ie-doing that every oil change but then it ends up taking you like 2 years lol.

i'm a fan of the single time full fluid exchange using the cooler lines.

I did it 13 times in one day once, on a land rover which I had accidentally dunked in 4 feet of muddy water (which sucked in through the breather). It came out clean in the end. When I took it to aamco, they coulnd't do it with their flushy thing, something about a wrong size adapter.

How do you do it with the cooler lines?

I'm part of the incremental 2 qt drain crowd. At my maintenance schedule this comes every 10K miles. If done on schedule, the incremental method is passable as the additive package isn't depleted. If one is driving the 30K miles on the fluid then do as PD mentions.
