I have 2000 ls400..i just change the battery on it.. Now everything works fine but the telescoping steering wheel wont move when i put the key in the ignition..it was working fine before i change the battery..it moves in and out but doesnt drop down automatic into place when i put the key in the ignition....


Please help!!!

yeah i check all the fuse under the hood..is there another fuse box some where?

no it does not..if you adjust it from the toggle switch..it only moves in and out but not up and down..

I'm new to this and I'm trying to figure my steering wheel problem out too, but there is a fuse box way under the driver side door too, you have to look under the wheel, it's probably close to the parking brake

A few months back, I had a new tilt motor replaced in my 99. and last week I took the old one apart, I could not turn it. after disassembly, I was surprised how simple it is inside. my shaft was stuck in the bearing, I pulled the shield off and lubed it and it freed up and was easier to turn. there were no broken or loose parts. and probably a new bearing would have saved a lot of money. I did not try to remove the bearing, probably should have to see if I could match it up. any way if you are handy with your hands/tools, you might want to try fixing yours.

Billy, I think I saw a previous post that you hadn't plugged the motor in yet to verify that it worked. Did that do the job?

Also, I have seen several posts on this subject that seem to correspond to folks that have just changed out their battery. In fact, that is when I first discovered my exact same symptoms a few years ago, as well. At the time, I thought it was just a coincidence, and I wasn't aware of the Lexus forums. Now I'm suspecting otherwise. It may have something to do with a worn-out or struggling motor, that finally jambs up hard when given a better power source. OR, could it be something in the control circuit that is tripping out, because of the higher battery voltage, resulting in higher current draw? Root cause analysis always makes perfect sense, in hindsight, but the correlation here seems a little too coincidental. Anyone know of a possible link, or solution?

NO I have not plugged it in, my point above is that I could NOT turn it before disassembly and could turn by hand after lubing the bearing. I do not know if it would work properly now.

Now that I think about it...

I had a similar issue when my power steering pump leak ruined my alternator and battery. After I replaced those three, my steering wheel would move some but would grind as if gears were stripping (they were). Not sure why they were related, but I made a shim and installed it under the gearing to the left of the steering column (do a search, don't have a link bookmarked). Now it works fine, but (as has been for the 8 years I've had the car) it's just noisy. My buddies' 99 is silent. Not sure what is causing the whine.

try pressing toggle downwards 10 times ..hope it helps..
