Coolant from Toyota?
Greetings!
Can I get the correct antifreeze (for a 96) in a Toy dealership? I only ask because another item (the T4 ATF) is less than half the price it is in the Lexus shop.

Yes, the '96 takes the red Toyota long life coolant (not the pink super long life). You could theoretically switch to the pink, but getting all the old red coolant out would be a hassle; e.g. some owners can't find the engine block drain plugs or can't figure out how to open the drain plugs. With the red you don't have to mess with those plugs, just drain the radiator, measure the amount drained and refill with the same amount using 50% red antifreeze mixed with 50% distilled water (mix them in a separate container).

You can get it at a Toyota dealer seeing how it's a Toyota engine. I'm not sure if the price would be any less though. Although, most "parts" for the Lexus that you can get from Toyota are cheaper. Give it a shot. If you don't have the same type in there make sure you flush all the other type out.

You can, I buy most the tranny and coolant from a Toyota dealership.
As far as coolant drain intervals, you have the thermostat to contend with every 30K miles. If even draining off that little bit to swap thermostats, it doesn't take that much to drain it all and be sure. So you are having to do coolant maintenance anyway. I stick with the long life red. One jug is sufficient to do the car about 2 times at a 50-50 mix.
$26 for red and $1 for distilled jug of water. I forget what the pink costs.

I have been using the Toyota red now for 12 years on a 1991 LS400 I change it every 2 years in Dec I drain the block and radiator and just refill it with the red fluid 50/50 with distilled water no flushing I still have the orignal hoses and radiator so far so good

2004 and on up models use the pink colored Toyota Super Long Life antifreeze
(it's twice as expensive since it comes ready to use instead of as a concentrate that you dilute 50/50 with distilled water).
