Default starters on 92 ls 400

I have a 92 ls 400 and my starter went out. The question I have is how rare is it for the starter to go out and could it be the contacts in the starter that went out instead? If anyone could help me that would be great because it would save me alot of money! the other question I have is how do you remove the wireing harness from on top of the cross member to get to the starter bolts?

Welcome to CL.
Plenty of past discussion starter swaps and like. The contacts and plunger wear so replacing those is the cure.

Here is two to get you "started"...hahahaha:

There are a couple of schools of thought when it comes to replacing / repairing these starters. Some people on here have had great luck rebuilding their original (new brushes & a good cleaning). If the vehicle is in otherwise good condition and has plenty of life left in it, I for one would replace it with a new OEM. Only reason being is that they are such a PITA to get at. I would want to make sure it was a job I only had to do once... I think a new OEM can be had online for just north of $200...
