When, if ever, was the 90k tuneup done? This is where the timing belt was replaced among other things.

don't know about the loud noise, but sudden loss of power could result from a bad ignition coil. Check the resistances (primary and secondary) of each coil and compare to the spec in the shop manual.

Loud noises are not good. Electronics typically just fail, no noise and car stops running. If you lose one coil, it will sputter and lope along lacking power.

Can you describe the noise before it stopped running?
How many miles on car?
On a re-start, what type of sounds?

My thoughts, seized water pump, broken timing belt. There are a few other possibilities but you'll need to accurately describe the noise and problems.

Remove the battery and you will see it mounted on the side of the engine above the AC compressor.

Not to be a wiseguy, but how long ago was 90k for your LS? What's the current mileage?

And when you say the car lost power, you mean it lost all power (and had to be towed because it couldn't move) or it lost some of its power and didn't feel strong, but could still drive?

it lost most of its power and barely made it up the road..
the car has 150,000 miles on it..

i plug a new coil to the top one and car would not start plug the old one back and plug new one to bottom coil starts fine but when i press the gas the whole car tumbles and shakes sounds a little like a diesel and smells like gas really bad..

The smell of gas probably indicates a misfire. You should really perform some diagnostics first before you start swapping parts in and out. Here are the test procedures for a 1991 - it shows how to test for spark and how to test your coils - you should look in a manual for a 1996 in case yours differs.
