Thumbs down selt belt trouble

I'm in some need of assistance and wondering if anyone else has had this problem yet. A few months back this happened, was buckling up and as soon as a pulled my seat belt I heard this loud snap and then my seat belt was everywhere. I dont know the proper name for the part but its where the seat belt gets wound up at. Something snapped so now it fails to retract. I took this problem to my local lexus dealer and the part alone is $400. I've searched my local junkyards for 3 months now and finally came across a working one. Only problem is how do I take off my seat belt and put it on the piece I found? anyone have this happen to their seatbelts yet? or have any experience with working on the seatbelts in general?

It is not really that hard, just remove the trim (gently, no force) panel and unbolt (both ends)the seat belt (should be really tight) and put the working one on, you just busted the recoil spring in it.

Don't you have to take certain precautions when working on the seat belt because of the pre tensioner system?

A link to pics (my post #5) and a diagram here:

While I haven't had the recoil spring break on me, I have a few where they don't recoil fast enough requiring them to be replaced.

Not to my knowledge.

It's not that I have a problem removing the piece. It's out of the car right now but the one I got from the junkyard I couldn't take the whole seat belt. I had to cut it to remove it. What im saying is I wanna take the junkyard seat belt tensioner and put my seat belt in it.

Oh, that info would have been helpful in your original post.

However, I have no idea. I guess you'll just have to take it apart piece by piece and take pics along the way to help you put it back together.

Good Luck.

Looking in my manual, it doesn't show anything on how it comes apart. It does say CAUTION: Never disassemble the front seat outer belt. Which is what you're talking about doing. Why couldn't you get the whole belt from the junkyard? I think you're gonna have to get another one. It only has the one bolt on top and 2 bolts and the electrical connecter on the bottom.

yeah.....there's a small explosive in there on some kinds of tensioners, so you're going to need a whole belt assy.
car-part.com, get on it.

the car I got the seat belt from was hit on the drivers side and rolled. There was enough room to just take it apart from the bottom and cut it. The roof and B pillar got smashed down into the front seats. I figured since the seat belt still went back in it was fine to take seeing how it would be a step up from no seat belt at all.
out of the whole 4 years of owning my LS ive only seen 2 at all my local junkyards and there is about 12 junk/scrap yards around me

I could be wrong, but it looks like your seat belt doesn't have a pretensioner that you need to worry about going off. If you look at the first pic in my thread here:

http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums...dpost&p=346854

I believe the long tube is what give the pretensioner its explosive power.

Like I said, I could be wrong so proceed cautiously.
