Default EGR troubleshooting

So I'm getting a code 71 and this weekend I pulled the whole EGR system and cleaned it. The plate from the egr to the manifold had one whole side blocked solid. It runs better but the code 71 is back. Does anyone have the manual pages on how to troubleshoot the system? I don't want to throw parts at it and it could be one of several parts...

I looked up parts for the heck of it! YUK! The EGR is $240 and the temp sensor is $125 for AFTERMARKET... yikes!

and the Vacuum Modulator Valve Assembly is $104 new OEM... def need to troubleshoot

right, but still not worth plugging $100-200 into it when I could buy the one right part for less.... plus salvage yards are hard to come by in new england compared to out west...

Why can't you block it off if you're selling it? Is there some laws out in the sticks of New Hampshire? I think Billy means when you figure it out to grab the parts from the JY.

NH doesn't have emissions on a car this old but Mass and Maine do so I don't want to limit the market...

Sometimes it's cheaper to have it diagnosed somewhere and then you change whatever part it turns out to be. But, sometimes your ego gets the best of ya and you don't want other people touching your car. In that case, you can spend thousands just throwing parts at a problem, like so many of us have done in the past.

Found the problem. I paid the $15 for TIS, downloaded the EGR system tests, EGR was good, VSV was good, but the EGR vacuum modulator was toast. $104 but at least I didn't pay $85 to have it diagnosed and whatever list is for the part...

Moral of the story is that TIS is your friend...
